Avatar: The Last Airbender serves as a solid live-action entry point into the beloved franchise, although it only sporadically recaptures the magic of its source material.

Noëlle D. Lilley Chicago Reader It's undeniable that Netflix's adaptation is a reminder of how much we missed the world of Avatar. It's still so much fun, and there's still so much to learn with messages that ring even more true today... Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Devan Coggan Entertainment Weekly The result is a charming but imperfect adaptation that vastly improves upon the 2010 film — but never soars quite as high as the original animated show. Rated: B- Feb 23, 2024 Full Review Laura Babiak Observer The Netflix adaptation is far from a disaster, but it doesn’t master the elements that made the original so good. Feb 23, 2024 Full Review Stacey Yvonne Wealth of Geeks At its best, Avatar: The Last Airbender proved that the premise was a fantastic story with lots of potential. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 31, 2025 Full Review Annie Banks The Mary Sue Maybe, just maybe, Avatar: The Last Airbender didn't need to be adapted into live action twice over. Rated: 5/10 Oct 28, 2024 Full Review Seb Jenkins Loud and Clear Reviews Entire episodes and storylines were lost along the way, but I think the Netflix team stayed true to the general spirit of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Nigel H Not sure why this is rated poorly by the critics. I watched this with my tween son, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. In a sea of alternative shows that are full of gore or adult themes, Avatar offered great live action and entertaining fight sequences. Was the dialogue corny sometimes? Sure. But the story line and character conversation mostly made up for it. It might not be the best show for a 20 year old looking for the next Game of Thrones, but it was full of heart and fun, and that was plenty good for me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Eugene K I tried really hard to watch this all the way through but the dialog was extremely bad. I'd rather just watch the cartoon. Graphics looked pretty good but the dialog was so medicore it ruined it Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Kayla K Really good show can't wait for Season 2&3. Hope the actors all the best 👍 👌 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Scott N Quick summary: Underwhelming and disappointing. The rushed story telling leaves the characters growth and mission feeling flat and nothing man than a quick trip to defeat the fire nation as if it's not really that big of a deal. TLDR summary: This series is a poor attempt to re-capture the magic and inspiration of the original series. it takes a more cartoony approach at telling the story than the cartoon itself with extremely rushed story telling. If the original cartoon did not exist to fill in the blanks the gaping holes in the storyline would be insurmountable. The costume work and writing for king boomy being the first really big disappointment. Creative attempts are made to inject new content that original from the cartoon series in order to stretch time but it comes off as mostly unnecessary and doesn't further the plot. The best one of these scenes being Lo Ten's funeral. Perhaps one of the worst insults to the original content is the removal of emotionala nd societal growth opportunities between the protagonists and antagonists. Sokka doesn't learn to grow up and respect his peers. Katara doesn't get the chance to break societal norms in the Northern Water tribe. And she spends literally one day training with the master before being declared a master herself. Once again a bi-product of overly rushed story telling. Just like the Live action movie, Iroh is the best part of the series. If you're a die hard ATLA fan I can only recommend you watch it out of curiosity. If all you care about is seeing some somewhat cool sets with effects that are sometimes great and sometimes a 3/10 then go for it. If you want to keep your love for the series pure, i'd recommend a pass. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Ryan W Aang isn't played by a Full Asian actor. That gripe aside, Avatar is too silly for live action, and comes off as ridiculous at times. Feels cash grabby to an extent. Lee Sun-Hyung is a good Uncle Iroh though. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review Michael T They basically took the source material, shuffled the dialogue, removed character development, inserted their own nonsensical character "development", and sucked out the few moments of joy the characters had in the original that showed there was something worth fighting for. Overall, it just ended up being a bland attempt at an adaptation. The film was far worse, but it was so bad that it was memorable. The show is so "meh" that it winds up being totally forgettable.
