Demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine figured there was no longer any point in fighting the good fight since his soul belongs to the netherworld, but when demons target the daughter of one of his closest friends, Liv, he reluctantly rejoins the battle. It turns out that Liv has second sight, an ability to see other worlds and predict supernatural occurrences, a power that makes her a threat to the new evil rising from the shadows. She and Constantine take their combined skills on the road, traveling the country to find demons and send them back to hell.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Constantine's creepy atmosphere, high-stakes action, and splendid special effects combine with a welcome touch of humor to overcome narrative flaws and present a version of the title character that's close to his comics counterpart.

Tim Goodman The Hollywood Reporter The real hook, the reason it's worth waiting on to see if Constantine can develop, is star Matt Ryan, who manages to ground what otherwise seems like an insane amount of explosions, action without reason and utter jibberish. Oct 27, 2014 Full Review Patrick Kevin Day Los Angeles Times Unfortunately, while Constantine... gets a lot of little things right, overall it feels too much like a mishmash. Oct 27, 2014 Full Review Brandon Nowalk AV Club In a good year for comic adaptations, Constantine balances the heavy mood of Gotham with the heavy plotting of The Flash. Rated: B+ Oct 27, 2014 Full Review Peter Counter That Shelf There are currently four television series airing based on DC Comics properties and as it stands Constantine looks like it could be the best of them. Aug 13, 2024 Full Review Karen Rought Hypable The pilot does a great job of giving you an overall sense of what the show will be like. It's big and scary, all-encompassing and driven by Constantine's guilt. Rated: 4/5 Mar 4, 2019 Full Review Jeffrey Lyles Lyles' Movie Files Packs as many genuine scares and jump in your seat moments as any recent full-length feature film backed by terrific performances from lead Matt Ryan. Neil M A Decent Effort That Suffered from Its Format The Constantine TV show had a better lead in Matt Ryan, strong supernatural world-building, and plenty of occult weirdness to dig into. But its episodic format held it back—the show never got the full narrative arc it needed to truly shine. ✔ Matt Ryan embodied Constantine better than anyone but still not perfect. ✔ The show captured the dark, supernatural tone of Hellblazer. ✔ Interesting lore and great potential. ❌ Procedural format killed the momentum. ❌ Felt like it was trying too hard to be a "TV Constantine." ❌ Canceled before it could really hit its stride. ✔️ Verdict: A show with a good lead actor and strong ideas, but lacking a focused, serialized story to make it truly compelling. 3/5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/25 Full Review mack m If you like to read comic books and if you like Marvel junk, you will probably like this series. I couldn't watch it as it was too much like a comic book and there was no degree of any sort of connection to reality. I loved the original movie with Keanu Reeves and this was not even 5% the caliber that that movie was. They tried cramming so much stuff into the pilot episode it bordered on stupidity. This was just pure amusement park nonsense, and it was made for the 15 and under crowd, or the people who love Marvel type garbage. It's just not me, I could barely get through the first episode. Yikes. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review T Very good series. It's a shame there's no sequel. If you find a way to watch this show, you should. It is really good. The effects are great, better than expected for tv, and the acting is superb. It is sad the show got cancelled.
