Spanning five decades, "Fosse/Verdon" explores the singular romantic and creative partnership between Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. Bob is a visionary filmmaker and one of the theater's most influential choreographers and directors, and Gwen is the greatest Broadway dancer of all time. Only Bob can create the groundbreaking musicals that allow Gwen to showcase her greatness. Only Gwen can realize the unique vision in Bob's head. Together, they will change the face of American entertainment -- at a perilous cost.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams give viewers plenty of razzle and dazzle in Fosse/Verdon -- a straightforward miniseries that is hampered by rote biographical tropes, but still shimmies with the requisite glitz, grit, and all that jazz audiences crave.

Allison Keene Collider Fosse/Verdon makes decent use of its period setting, but the desire to make the series feel as theatrical as a Fosse play leads to a mishmash in tone. Rated: 2/5 Nov 26, 2019 Full Review Christina Newland Empire Magazine In spite of a sometimes unfocused narrative, Fosse/Verdon goes into the cruelty and glamour of showbiz, and features a striking, stand-out performance from Michelle Williams. Rated: 3/5 Nov 26, 2019 Full Review Camilla Long Times (UK) It's poignant and well made, but do we really care about the legend behind the myth behind the reality of what happened with the Cabaret gorilla suit? Nov 26, 2019 Full Review Taylor Baker Drink in the Movies Episode 41: Best of 2019 So Far Rated: 96/100 Oct 4, 2021 Full Review Susan Granger www.susangranger.com In an incandescent performance, Michelle Williams captures Verdon's intuitive intelligence and irresistible exuberance... while Sam Rockwell depicts the workaholic essence of Fosse's weariness. Nov 26, 2019 Full Review Soumya Srivastava Hindustan Times The show does a brilliant job of showing the changing dynamics between this married couple through some really tense scenes and dialogues, played masterfully by [Michelle] Williams and [Sam] Rockwell. Adam S this show fell into my lap years ago. Never would have chosen to watch it. The story's play with time and space is stellar. Rockwell and Williams kill it. Well written, acted, directed, and produced. Marvelous show Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review Nashville I Given the cast and what to expect, the series turned out to be incredibly underwhelming. It's well acted and directed, but the truth is there's no rising action anywhere in the series and comes off as very dull. It's informative and interesting from a historical standpoint, but unfortunately not entertaining. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/29/24 Full Review J M For those of you who are old enough to remember the time period portrayed in this 8 part FX limited series or those of you familiar with the work of Fosse and/or Verdon, such as DAMN YANKEES, CABARET, CHICAGO and ALL THAT JAZZ, this is an irresistible entertainment. It starts a bit slow, but after the first couple episodes, it takes off like a locomotive and is utterly fascinating. Rockwell is fine, if a bit one-note as Fosse, but Williams is absolutely transcendent as Verdon - her performance is revelatory and just gets better and better. I also loved Qualley's interpretation of Ann Reinking and Norbert Leo Butz as playwright Paddy Chayefsky. It's also fun to see interpretations of Neil Simon, Shirley MacLaine, Dustin Hoffman and Roy Scheider, among others. Their daughter is given quite a bit of screen time in the earlier episodes but feels all but forgotten by the final episode, and there are times when Fosse's consistent infidelity and self-destruction feel a bit tedious, but overall this is a great binge watch and highly recommended! - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Audience Member I think RTs consensus on this is bit harsh.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The scripts are improving, but Michelle Williams has been stellar, throughout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a phenomenal show! Michelle Williams IS Gwen Verdon and Sam Rockwell absolutely nails another precise character. So well done ALL!
