Three young men and three young women -- of the BFF kind -- live in the same apartment complex and face life and love in New York. They're not above sticking their noses into one another's business and swapping romantic partners, which always leads to the kind of hilarity average people will never experience -- especially during breakups.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Friends' daffy situations elicit just as many eye-rolls as laughs, but this perky sitcom gets by with a little help from its immensely likable cast.

Darrin Farrant The Age (Australia) You soon find yourself laughing with the characters, rather than at them -- just one sign of show that's a cut above the class. Feb 24, 2021 Full Review Brian Courtis The Age (Australia) This one is a slow-burner, with a pilot that produces a confusion of smart young things with clever lines but little else. The show sorts itself out by the middle of the second episode... I have a feeling this one will grow on us. Feb 24, 2021 Full Review Debi Enker The Age (Australia) Funny and bouncy, smart, sometimes surprising and, well, friendly. Feb 24, 2021 Full Review James Endrst Hartford Courant These aren't people you'd actually want to invite into your home. From the producers of HBO's hilarious Dream On, this half-hour is completely lacking in charm or intelligence. Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Joyce Millman San Francisco Examiner Friends gets funnier and stronger next week, when Kauffman and Crane don't have to strive to set up the Basic Premise. The deftly plotted episode benefits from the presence of three actual situations, and culminates in clever paralleling. Feb 24, 2021 Full Review Diane Holloway Austin American-Statesman The show does have its funny moments despite the fact that it portrays twentysomethings as completely goofy and self-absorbed. Miguel T Friends season 1 is a comedy miracle, and a show that will never old, due to the chemistry of the cast. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/01/25 Full Review Frank C More proof that women are high-functioning children. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Ali J I like this first season, but it’s definitely not as funny as the later seasons. It’s weaker than them, but still enjoyable. I didn’t like that Ross never told Rachel in this season how he feels about her, and I also didn’t like that after Paolo sexually assaulted Phoebe, Ross wanted Phoebe to tell Rachel immediately without caring that Rachel may hate Phoebe. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Chris F I grew up with these guys. I was 16 when this series appeared on TV. Yes, TV. No streaming back then. Today, 30 years after season 1 came out, I still feel close to the 5 and I watch Friends with my teenage children now. They love it too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Max W The lovable characters, enviable relationships, and aspirational lifestyles in Friends almost create the ideal life in everyone’s mind. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Zamya F Season 1 is fantastic Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
