Set in Texas, an animated series follows the life of propane salesman Hank Hill, who lives with his substitute-teacher wife Peggy, wannabe comedian son Bobby, and deadbeat niece Luanne. Hank has strikingly stereotypical views about God and country but is unpretentious and sees the world simply.

Critics Consensus

King of the Hill's mild yet extremely funny depiction of small-town Texas life is refreshingly worlds away from from conventional prime-time animation.

John Voorhees Seattle Times Some of "King of the Hill," set in a small Texas town, was subversively funny; but parts of it just seemed strange. Still, all of it seemed different enough and quirky enough to make me want to see more episodes. Aug 27, 2019 Full Review Tom Shales Washington Post "Hill" is a pleasant surprise, touching and winsome and deliciously sly. Aug 27, 2019 Full Review Ken Tucker Entertainment Weekly A fine, nuanced portrait of a middle-class Texas family that also happens to be a cartoon from the man who gave us Beavis and Butt-head, King Of The Hill is both extremely funny and intelligent. Rated: B+ Aug 27, 2019 Full Review Aaron Barnhart Kansas City Star King of the Hill is a pleasure to listen to, refreshingly free of easy laugh lines or catch phrases. And Hank's deadpan delivery (supplied by Judge himself) elevates just about anything coming out of his mouth. Apr 6, 2021 Full Review Julia Lee Polygon I am addicted. Sep 29, 2020 Full Review Tom Gliatto People Magazine King of the Hill, about a lower-middle-class family in a Texas suburb, is harmless and pointless. Ben F This is definitely one of if not my favorite show of all time I can't wait until we get the show back on hulu Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Tyler Y Every character grows on you more and more over the course of this series, there is something really special about this cast and how they act against each other. You will be surprised by how beautiful some of the episodes can be as the series goes on, with Hank and his son Bobby always trying to better relate to each other. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/21/23 Full Review Georgan G Best animated series, ever! Funny but heartfelt, with believable characters. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A show about a milk toast propane salesman with no funny bone in Everytown, USA shouldn't have worked; but it did in a grand way. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member propane and propane accessories Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member King of the Hill really came out the gate as a breath of fresh air for animated sit-coms, even for a post-SImpsons climate, and we've still yet to see another series that brought such a natural air to the medium. Mike Judge and Greg Daniels really brought something special to this series, with the juxtaposition of Judge's penchant for deadpan humor with Daniels' experience with broader sit-com tropes making for a strange beast, as sharp as it was original. The show's inferences into life in the south and the conservative mindset will certainly be funnier for those that grew up in Texas, but the humor is so wise and layered that it couldn't help but attract a universal air. Two decades later, the show's satire on America is still relatable, and its actually nice to see these rightwing characters in a more generous presentation. King of the Hill would go on to last whopping 259 episodes, but this first season likely featured Judge and Daniels vision for the series at its most unfiltered.
