Ben Pobjie Sydney Morning Herald Maybe I'm being uncharitable, but I have a strong suspicion that Law & Order SVU has reached a 17th season mainly by being quiet and not causing any trouble, so that its parent network just forgot it was still on. I Apr 17, 2020 Full Review Laura Bradley Slate The episode ["Patrimonial Burden"] was classic Law and Order -- a ripped-from-headlines, hyperdramatized story that benefitted from a clever use of plot misdirection. Apr 16, 2020 Full Review Neal Justin Minneapolis Star Tribune Aside from Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has never gotten many props for its cast, but the procedural has endured in large part because of its deep roster of theater-trained performers. Apr 16, 2020 Full Review Jane Bowron The Post NZ Removing the enormously popular Hargitay from the cast would be unthinkable, though Donal Logue held his own playing the puce-faced maverick Declan Murphy. Apr 16, 2020 Full Review Michael Hewitt Orange County Register Another once-excellent series that has been on far too long. Now in its 17th year, "L&O: SVU" is in danger of logging more bad seasons than good ones. Apr 16, 2020 Full Review Jack Ori TV Fanatic There's something comforting about knowing exactly how the hour will proceed. Then, once in a while, SVU breaks the mold and instead delivers a creepy, weird story. Law & Order: SVU Season 17 Episode 1 is one of those times. Audience Member Amazing season with compelling storylines and episodes! One of the best in the show's history! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Old, Dead, Uninspiring. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member SVU is absolutely a fabulous show, perhaps one of the best in the history of television. I stumbled upon the show on Netflix, so I started viewing the series with season 13. I watched seasons 13-17 first, and now I've just gone back and started with season 1 (thank you Hulu!). Having fallen in love with the characters and storylines starting in season 13, then going back to season 1, I have to say I don't understand any of the fuss about Christopher Meloni--granted, I've just started (I'm mid way through season 1), but I find Meloni arrogant and narcissitic, believable as a cop but not that likable, so hands down 'SVU 2.0' is the much better show. The characters all wrestle with their own problems, while still caring deeply about the victims they are trying to help (so far, I've never believed Meloni truly cares about the victims). I think Benson has blossomed in his absence, and I think it's really inspiring to watch her manage her own life, being the boss, and still finding the energy to care about others--not an easy task. I try to live by the saying, not one person can save the world, but we can help the people who cross our paths, and I really admire Ms. Hargitay, the entire cast and crew, as well as the producers and network, for keeping this show going--I'm sure it is not easy to stay on the same show for years and years, and creatively I'm sure they would love to move on to other projects, but this show does a lot of good in the world--it helps give voice to people who have suffered in horrible ways, reminding both the victims and the viewers watching the show, of the struggles for justice, of our role in society for helping put a stop to such evils. Pay attention, listen, and don't hesitate to call 911 if something isn't right--we share such a brief time on this planet together, we owe it to each other to look out for one another. Sometimes a show can magically balance art, entertainment and social good, and this show manages to harness them all, without sacrificing any of them for the other. A rare feat. I hope this show lasts another twenty years...as long as there is suffering in the world, we need this show to help us shed light, insight, and hope for the world. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This has got to be the worst episode of Law and Order SVU I have ever seen. The writing, directing, and editing being so all over the place that a third grader could have done a better job. And the threats to Barba plot? Gone elsewhere apparently. Seems that someone forgot all about him and so except for showing up at the bar for Dodds wake, he disappeared. One of the main problems with SVU these days is that it always somehow ends up being about Olivia Benson. Even Dodds getting shot turns out to be all about her. And the funniest part of this episode occurred when her therapist or counsellor told her that no one could have seen this (Dodd getting shot and dying) coming - no one that is except for pretty well everybody who was watching the show. In fact, the "plot" was so thinly delivered that as soon as Dodds offered to go with Olivia, his doom was assured. This show has run its course and if they insist on bringing it back for yet another season they should rename it "All about Olivia" because ever since she became a producer of the show that is exactly what has happened - her being the focus and everybody else (even the dead guy) being put in the background. Dreadful Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Extraordinary cast chemistry led by the Mariska Hargitay, coupled with tight, relevant scripting, direction and editing. This season has taken an already superb show to another level entirely. Some may find the legal decisions upsetting, but this about as real as it gets.
