      Critics Consensus

While an always engaging Gina Rodriguez is enough to ensure that this supernatural comedy isn't dead on arrival, it'll need more spark to survive viewer disinterest.

Sofi A Bastante entretenida, no es un concepto tan original pero es graciosa. Es una de esas series perfectas para ver un domingo de tarde. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Robyn H Love, love, love this show! Great cast! Gina is brilliant! Very different and entertaining concept for a show. 💕 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/23 Full Review Lindsey A The only original element of Not Dead Yet, which follows the long-trodden trope of a protagonist who learns lessons from ghosts, is the annoyingly narcissistic angle that defines every otherworldly interaction. Why is our protagonist haunted by ghosts? Because she is writing their obituaries, obviously (what?!). These poor lost souls' only apparent reason for hanging in limbo is to talk her through whatever micro-drama she's confronted with (or confronting within) each episode. Sad way for their lives to end, if you ask me. And how terribly convenient it is that they seem wholly untraumatized by their deaths, since that would eat precious air time when we could be focusing on the protagonists' self-centered struggles. Your time would be better spent watching Pushing Daisies. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/09/23 Full Review Alexis L I'm not often one to write reviews, but when I do, it is because the praise is well deserved. I initially felt compelled to watch Not Dead Yet seeing that it included three of my favorite sitcoms actresses: Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez, New Girl's Hannah Simone & Superstore's Lauren Ash. I am elated that I decided to watch Not Dead Yet, as it is a beautifully written sitcom that follows the personal and spiritual development of main character, Nell Serrano, played by Gina Rodriguez, in a way that is magical, emotional, and relatable. Nell is picking up the pieces of her life after a difficult chapter and is reflective of many of us who have gone through hard, life changing experiences that are difficult to navigate and move forward from. The parallel of the magical aspects of her life to her personal & spiritual development is wonderfully illustrated and thought provoking. Additionally, the cast and characters are inclusive to individuals of various ages, backgrounds, and struggles in a way that is natural and insightful rather than forced. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/26/23 Full Review Sara J I love everything about this show. Not only dose it dive into the characters own struggles and everyday issues but I found myself seeing things that I too need to work on. It brought a lot of life lessons that sometimes get lost with age back into the spotlight yet again. This show is nothing but refreshingly and heartwarming. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/06/23 Full Review B T It really had the potential to be great, but did not achieve this by the end of the season. The only plus was the side characters. Dan Fienberg Hollywood Reporter The inevitable question when I say, “It isn’t good, but then it becomes a different show!” is “Is the other show good?” So far, with Not Dead Yet, I can only say that it’s better. But that might not be endorsement enough. Feb 8, 2023 Full Review Cristina Escobar RogerEbert.com Thankfully, the lesson-of-the-week format doesn’t venture into after-school-special because the show takes its characters’ problems seriously, never condescending but rather approaching each person with empathy. Feb 8, 2023 Full Review Lauren Sarner New York Post “Not Dead Yet” is more tepid than it should be. But it’s a fine Gina Rodriguez vehicle, and if you want to watch a network sitcom, you could do worse. Feb 7, 2023 Full Review Jason Fraley WTOP (Washington, D.C.) Gina Rodriguez fans will cheer her return after “Jane the Virgin." She's totally relatable again as the wounded but resilient Nell. It's also fun to see which guest stars show up as the weekly ghosts, who only disappear when she hits publish. Rated: 4/5 Jul 29, 2023 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba Rodriguez is fine, and Not Dead Yet looks to be another in a string of better-than-decent network sitcoms, which have given broadcast networks a reason to exist beyond as vehicles for commercials during NFL games. Feb 23, 2023 Full Review Laura Bradley The Daily Beast Rodriguez is as charming as ever in ABC’s new comedy about an obituary writer who sees dead people. Unfortunately, the show around her is erratic as hell. Feb 17, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
