Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman for CBS All Access, the story of "Star Trek: Discovery" begins roughly a decade before Captain Kirk's five-year mission -- as portrayed in the original "Star Trek" from the 1960s -- and a century before the events of "Star Trek: Enterprise." The series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they encounter new worlds and civilizations, delving into familiar themes and expanding upon an incident that has been talked about within the franchise's universe, but never fully explored.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

With less canonical baggage and a welcome dose of character development, Discovery continues to forge its own path and is narratively all the better for it.

Devon Maloney New York Magazine/Vulture It's finally able to grow, unfettered by entrenched canon or unnecessary blockbuster aspirations (or unnecessary white guys - did y'all even see one this week?), into a series that will succeed or fail as a Star Trek show on its own merits. Rated: 5/5 Oct 22, 2020 Full Review Pat Brown Slant Magazine Despite a premiere that augurs poorly for its broader narrative arc, Discovery's third season at least momentarily succeeds in thinking about undiscovered things to come. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 22, 2020 Full Review Zack Handlen AV Club This isn't even a bad set-up for a season-long arc, it's just so quick to assume we'll automatically care that it doesn't bother explaining why it matters. Rated: B Oct 22, 2020 Full Review Bill Brioux Brioux.tv Leaping ahead 900 years seemed to really liberate the storytelling and the series has finally found the right balance between big-screen action and (sometimes too much) dialogue. Oct 11, 2022 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies With a jump into the distant future, Star Trek: Discovery is truly going where no one has gone before. Rated: 4/5 Apr 28, 2022 Full Review James Whitbrook io9.com For the most part, it crucially remembers the themes and character beats that have mattered most to Discovery this season, and how even at their simplest, they've lent the show a sense of optimism it's always wanted to chase... kyle s This whole show is trash....the multiple camera angle is jarring .... STOP! every moment is high drama! when some one has to go to the bathroom ....high drama.....the face acting is over the top. BAD... SOOOOO BAD! there are like 20 cameras for every scene ...haha. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/25 Full Review meaux c Michael Burnham is my favorite captain. its silly and leans a little Romantasy with some purple dialogue but I really enjoyed it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Myles H The pacing is awful and the science is nonsense. Everything is constantly a crisis with little character development. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review George A What is wrong with me? The Star Trek fan in me won’t give up hope that this will improve but it never does and only gets worse. It might be some form of Stockholm syndrome. This is terrible and borderline offensive it is so bad. Gene Roddenberry is turning in his grave as they soil on his legacy. I think I am now only hate watching this show. Learn from my mistakes and use the many hours I have lost watching this to do anything else. Visit a friend, make a gift for a loved one, try a restaurant you have never visited, learn guitar, stare at a wall. All of these are better options. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review DE S Cool venture I to the future, so episodes are surprising along the way, but the Burn mystery resolution leaves you flat. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Hunter M I'm here because the disparity between critic and audience ratings of this show is BANANAS. I've watched it up until the middle of Season 4 and I highly recommend the first three seasons... To understand where I'm coming from, I'll provide some opinions on other shows, and you can decide if we have enough in common to pay attention to this review. Great to Good Sci-Fi TV: Cowboy Bebop... Firefly... Andor Good to Decent Sci-Fi TV: Battlestar Galactica... The Mandalorian... Stranger Things... I think that for this show, the first and second seasons, and possibly the third, fall under Great to Good. For me, the fourth season has been a huge disappointment but a small price to pay for the previous 30-something hours of story. I've wondered about the disparity mentioned above, though. I imagine it's a combination of at least: 1. The drop in quality during seasons 4 and (I would guess) 5. 2. The inevitable tsunami of hurt feelings that come from massive fanbases when the source material is used as inspiration for a story instead of a manual for what to create. Look at certain Marvel movies... 3. The well-intentioned and noble pursuit of diversity and inclusion becoming so heavy-handed and ubiquitous... In my opinion, there's a point where the writers are clearly only being paid by how much they can beat these dead horses. The first three seasons championed this pursuit with good taste. After that it felt like it became an unhealthy obsession. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
