What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Chair is too short to achieve all of its ambitions, but spot-on observations about academia and a sturdy ensemble led by an empathetic -- and hilarious -- performance from Sandra Oh ensure it's never less than watchable.

The Chair is a heartfelt series, entertaining and insightful about the challenges facing academics as they fight to save their departments, their subjects, and themselves. Go to Full Review

Oh's comedic chops ensure Ji-Yoon's bravado is believable, and as the problems pile up, the funnier Ji-Yoon becomes. In a year full of strong female roles on screen, Oh has eclipsed them all. Go to Full Review
Lidija Haas The New Republic 09/03/2021
[The Chair] feels like a real attempt to grapple with the problems of contemporary academia, and the humanities in particular, by someone who has felt invested in them. Go to Full Review

8.5/10
The Chair is often funny, but it’s several steps above a typical sit-com. Oh manages to embody Ji-Yoon with exactly the right mashup of frustration and optimism, hope and despair. And, despite it all, she’s disarmingly funny. Go to Full Review

Peet and her team have developed a role worthy of Sandra Oh's brilliance. Her character is warm and human and Oh gets to be purely funny. It is a joy to watch and joy has been pretty thin on the ground lately. Go to Full Review

Mike M @RT23808699 Mar 24 This was the most ridiculous and stupid show I have ever seen. What a waste of time and a stupid plot. There is nothing funny about this show. I’d rather watch a tv test pattern than this garbage. See more Elena F @ElenaF708 Mar 15 Really enjoyed it and was sad it didn’t get a second season. A perfect drama to watch in the autumn. See more Shantel T @RT52309090 09/13/2024 It was ok! Kinda meh! See more Tania Lizzet M @RT48319656 09/15/2023 I really enjoy it, the humor behind very serios and actual topics See more Gareth v @geewah 06/23/2023 A show that focuses on the politics of an English department going through change, and while it is funny and rather witty at times, it does fade to quite an anti-climatic finish. See more Samantha C @RT12286239 01/24/2023 It's very tricky to bring up important subject matters with enough levity that it's easily digestible, without minimising the issues. The Chair does this wonderfully. Casting did a phenomenal job, the chemistry between the lead cast is so well executed. There's a Perfect balance of sincere performances and connections, layered with curve ball laugh out loud moments to keep things light. 'Dramedy' is balancing act that's much easier to get it wrong than right. The Chair got it right. Such a beautiful job blending the genres. See more Read all reviews
