Candi Carter
Candi Carter was an American TV producer who made history in 2016 by becoming the first African-American woman to hold the position of Executive Producer on the long-running daytime talk show "The View" (ABC, 1997- ). After graduating from Boston College in 1991 with a B.A. in Broadcast Communications, Carter embarked on her career in television. Her first job in the TV industry came the following year when she nabbed a dual role as a production coordinator and video journalist at CNN in Atlanta. Carter stayed at CNN for a year, where she learned the television business from the ground up. Having absorbed a good deal of practical information on the daily grind of the TV news business, Carter left CNN in 1993 to work for an ABC affiliate in Milwaukee. Over her two-year tenure with the ABC affiliate, Carter produced a variety of different children's programs, and went on to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Programming. Her Emmy win got the attention of Oprah Winfrey, who quickly hired Carter to work at Harpo - the production company that produced Oprah's daily daytime talk show. It was 1995, the height of "The Oprah Winfrey Show's" (ABC, 1986-2011) popularity, and Carter initially held the position of associate producer for the show. Over the course of her tenure at Harpo, however, Carter was increasingly trusted with higher levels of responsibility and eventually went on to become a senior producer of the show. After "The Oprah Winfrey Show" ended in 2011, Carter continued producing TV shows for ABC, as well as the BET Network. Then in 2015 she took a position as the interim showrunner for the long-running ABC daytime talk show "The View." After a successful season-long run as interim showrunner, Carter was promoted to executive producer of "The View," thus becoming the first African American woman to ever hold the position. When "The View" entered its 20th season in the fall of 2016, with Carter serving as executive producer, the show received some of its highest ratings in years.
