Chin Han
One of Singapore's most successful acting exports, Chin Han was perhaps best-known for his small but significant appearances in blockbusters "The Dark Knight" (2008), "2012" (2009) and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014). Born in 1969, Han studied for a degree in Economics and Linguistics at university before pursuing his acting ambitions, spending the next decade treading the boards in various productions including Moliere's "L'Ecole Des Femmes" and Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." After fronting a major ad campaign for Citibank, Han was offered his first on-screen part in "Masters of the Sea" (SBC, 1994), the first English drama to be produced in Singapore, and its resulting sequel, "In Troubled Waters" (SBC, 1995). Han then made his film debut playing doctor Daniel Hong in psychological thriller "Blindness" (1998) and appeared as Alex in the miniseries "AlterAsians" (2000), but subsequently switched his attention back to theatre, producing a number of plays and musicals including adaptations of Broadway hit "The Blue Room" and Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet." In the mid-2000s, he returned to being in front of the camera when he was cast as military leader Xuan in the AIDS-based Canadian drama "3 Needles" (2005), and three years later, made his first venture into Hollywood when he played mob accountant Lau in "The Dark Knight" (2008). Han continued to build a career Stateside with roles as Tibetan engineer Tenzin in disaster epic "2012" (2009), physician Dr. Lee in Gus Van Sant's romantic drama "Restless" (2011) and epidemiologist Sun Feng in Steven Soderbergh's medical thriller, "Contagion" (2012). Han then made the move into American TV with a one-off appearance in "Fringe" (Fox, 2008-2013), and recurring roles as Chinese envoy Zheng Li in military drama "Last Resort" (ABC, 2012-13), businessman Frank Chen in superhero hit "Arrow" (The CW, 2012-), and mysterious spy Wujing in the James Spader vehicle "The Blacklist" (NBC, 2013-). After playing Machiavellian schemer Chow in the adaption of graphic novel "The Sixth Gun," (2013) and David Chan, one of several chefs competing in a reality TV competition, in inter-generational comedy "Final Recipe," (2013) Han returned to his homeland to star as crime lord Kay Song in "Serangoon Road" (HBO Asia, 2013), a ten-part detective noir series set during the Malayan Emergency in 1960s Singapore. Han then added to his list of blockbuster hits when he was cast as Councilman Yen in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014) before landing the role of villainous chancellor Jia Sidao in the big-budget 13th Century epic "Marco Polo" (Netflix, 2014-).
