Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle The film's tone shifts from the raucous to the sad to the indomitable as these broken-but-unbowed warhorses do their best to hang onto their dreams. Audience Member Holding on to past glories, trying to rekindle dreams. It's not a feel-good movie, but it became less about roller derby, and more about the people, of course. Still really didn't go anywhere. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Documents the circumstances and compromises made during the rebirth of roller derby from the Bay Area, fairly depicting the generational and gender politics involved. Interesting for the insider perspective, but little effort is made to involve the uninitiated. This is a very specific doc with limited appeal, but with great subjects and covers an interesting time. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie mostly kept my interest, but as a documentary it was a bit too unfocused, and a lot of details that had the potential for serving a narrative purpose were left out or skimmed over. Perhaps part of the reason for this is that the story covers a very long period of time. The movie focuses mostly on Tim Patten as a kind of character study, but it also provides images of some of the major players, and it does delve a little bit into the scripted nature of roller derby "games", as well as the fights and the villains that make up part of the spectacle. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This documentary had moments of interest, especially for a San Franciscan like me, but there was no clear narrative, especially about the teams themselves. I would have liked to understand the sequence of events better and would also have loved to have seen them practice the fights, stunts, and falls that are so much a part of the live roller derbies.
