J J One of my favorite movies on early 80s cable. So keep that in mind. Low budget. Low quality film stock. Great cast. A film about Americans getting in over their heads, and it breaks some movie cliche's a few times brilliantly. Just watch a guard getting hit over the head... Not spoiling it, you'll see... Like a more macho Romancing the Stone where the macho runs out about half way through. This was also the first time Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones was used in an action sequence. Yes, even before Apocalypse Now. A cliche now, but it was new then, and awesome. This is a low budget gem if you like that sort of thing. Keep your expectations low and enjoy it. BTW, When it came out, Siskel and Ebert gave it two thumbs up. "I went in expecting the worst, and really enjoyed it." -Gene Siskel Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/24 Full Review Audience Member During a period of sluggish economy and high unemployment, four friends - Stone (James Brolin), Tony (Chick Vennera), Dan (Bruce Davison) and Rockney (Cleavon Little) gather for a fishing trip. The weekend getaway is a cover: they are really planning to fly to Colombia to rob a drug lord. They meet with Clint (Ernest Borgnine), who supplies them with weapons and target practice. It becomes clear that with the exception of Stone, the men have no relevant training and are not taking the heist seriously. The men are flown to a jungle. Their target is Serrano (James Coburn), a sadistic drug lord who lives in a large villa. The group observes Serrano, his staff and various visitors from a hidden vantage point. They discuss whether they would have the courage to actually kill someone, and what they will do with their share of the cash once they return home. They infiltrate the villa, capture Serrano and his lover, and force Serrano to reveal the combination to his safe. They escape from the villa with five million dollars in cash. They travel on foot through the jungle, eventually finding horses to buy. Believing that they have been successful, the men camp for the night and celebrate. They are unaware that they are being observed by a rebel tracker... This is your typical 80s action adventure that´s not really set in reality. Four friends decide to rob a drug lord in Colombia to get money to survive a sluggish economy and high unemployment... I think that says it all. The storyline makes no sense at all and to be honest despite the fact it´s supposed to be a popcorn action adventure I still think you can demand some sort of reality check in a story. The line between slapstick comedy and action doesn´t work in my eyes. And even if we are graced with the appearances of Ernest Borgnine, James Brolin, James Coburn, Anthony Quinn, Lindsay Wagner and Bruce Davison the film is just an 80s action footnote in my book. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I just couldn't identify with the main characters, I wanted the bandit guys to get the money in the end instead somehow. This just goes to show how greedy Americans are, I guess? Overall I didn't really enjoy this movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Four friends struggling to make ends meet go to Mexico and steal millions in cash from a drug lord. The guys here seem a bit too relaxed in their getaway when they know they would be hunted. Never figured out why they brought the poodle along. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Skip this one Netflix....some very big names does not make it into much a movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member 1981 action/adventure tells the story of four working class friends (James Brolin, Cleavon Little, Bruce Davidson and Chick Vennera) who are sick of working hard for nothing and decide to solve their financial problems by robbing a South American drug lord (James Corburn). When things go awry, the four find themselves fleeing through the jungle with an army and a group of rebels/bandits on their tails. Written and directed by Stewart Raffill (The Philadelphia Experiment), High Risk is a fun little action adventure that has more of a 70s vibe especially when stacked up against Raiders Of The Lost Ark which was released around the same time. It's a fast paced and entertaining flick that seems to have fallen through the cracks and been forgotten due to the phenom that was Indiana Jones' first adventure. And while it certainly doesn't stack up against that big budget classic, it is a fun comedy/adventure movie and has it's own share of chases, escapes and gun fire and certainly worth a watch if you're in the mood for a light and breezy action flick. Also stars Lindsay Wagner, Anthony Quinn and Ernest Borgnine. A sadly overlooked and fun little action gem. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
