      Critics Consensus

Suitably grand and special effects-laden, The Wolfman suffers from a suspense-deficient script and a surprising lack of genuine chills.

Tommy D This movie is amazing. Benicio del toro anthony opkins and emily blunt good actors Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Gregory T A solid yet imperfect modern-day entry into the "Universal Monsters" film series that I think deserves more praise than it gets. Excellent makeup and special effects, both practical and computer-generated. The character development needed work, and the major sequences felt rushed, but it's still an entertaining gothic horror film as is. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review richard c My only real complaint is you see the wolfman too much, what makes so many monster movies great is suspenseful leading up to you seeing the monster for the first time, like the original wolfman, alien and many others. That bias aside it was a well shot and fairly solid film with great acting. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Jerod S The Wolfman is interesting from a werewolf origin perspective, but it lacked so much tension that would have made it awesome. Blunt's love interest role didn't sizzle. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review Darren D One of the biggest missed opportunities to be a love letter to Universal Monsters for modern day audience "The Wolfman" from 2010, an odd entity as neither the Theatrical Cut or the Unrated Cut helps the film in anyway. The issue with both cuts, they give the feeling of wanting to tell a bigger story for each character & at the same time it feels like it being held back as it chooses to quickly get to the next big set piece. It's a shame this doesn't work as "The Wolfman" looks great, talented cast which sadly leaves Emily Blunt being wasted just to be the damsel in distress. The main takeaway & what I love about this, is the horror as the practical effects & kills are great & bloody, but unfortunately it's unable to save the rest of the film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Will _ This is a highly underrated film. I really don't understand the bad reviews for it and frankly think people are far too nostalgic for the 1941 classic. Many changes from the original film are better, some are not. Either way, it deserves more respect. I personally despise remakes but since I haven't watched the classic in nearly 40 years, I have no deep rooted connection to it anymore. Anyway, I watched this on a Sunday morning with simply one expectation, to be entertained. Well, that's what I got. Many of the visuals were extraordinary, such as the dream sequences, hallucinations, and such. Makeup was beautifully done, action and kill effects were just on point to where they are eye-popping, but not over-the-top. So why not five stars? This incomparable cast of favorites could've delivered an award winning performance, yet they knew what this was and I felt like even Sir Anthony Hopkins was playing it safe. Second, it was too short. In some ways, rushed. At no point was it slowed down to let the characters connect with each other, with me. I didn't care about Gwen's relationship with Lawrence, that's a shame. I would've liked to see twenty extra minutes of them bonding between full moons. What was John Talbot's daily routine? How was Inspector Francis spending his time on the investigation? This all could've been fleshed out to make the actors really dig in to their roles, but it wasn't. They didn't go all in. The film is...safe. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Sure, it's more sinister and gory (ridiculously so at times), but Del Toro's acting is a standout. Rated: B+ Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Keith Uhlich Time Out When the beast finally bursts forth, the character becomes, for the most part, a digitally augmented blur - there's no room for a performance underneath all the 0s and 1s. Had those essential elements of the story been developed further, this would be an effortless recommendation.
