The holiday season turns deadly for a group of sorority sisters (Katie Cassidy, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Lacey Chabert, Michelle Trachtenberg) who are stranded at their campus house during a snowstorm. These coeds better watch out, for a vicious killer is on the loose, and he will not care if they are naughty or nice.

Critics Consensus

A gratuitous remake of the 1974 slasher, Black Christmas pumps out the gore and blood with zero creativity, humor, or visual flair.

In its attempts to build a franchise and legacy, Black Christmas stabs itself in the eye. Blind from any sort of craft or talent, every piece of the film fails in an overly exploitive and off-putting experience that is impossible to justify watching. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 3d Black Christmas (2006) is a holiday horror film that struggles to deliver genuine scares or suspense. While the premise of a masked killer during Christmas has potential, the execution is inconsistent, with jump scares and tension falling flat. The casting is a highlight, as the actresses bring energy and charm, yet the screenplay underdevelops their characters, making it hard to care about their fates. The story itself is disjointed, with scenes that could be tense or pivotal often feeling rushed or irrelevant, which undermines engagement. Character dynamics are minimal, reducing stakes when danger arises, and the pacing fluctuates unpredictably, making the film hard to stay invested in. Cinematically, it follows standard slasher conventions but lacks creativity, failing to elevate suspense. Overall, while watchable for genre enthusiasts, Black Christmas doesn’t stand out as memorable or frightening, leaving much of its potential unrealized. See more Jens B @Jens97 4d Compared to the atmospherically dense and truly eerie original, the 2006 version really falls flat. I could identify two reasons for this: 1. We learn who the killer is far too early and, on top of that, are given their entire family history. The famous twist (the calls are coming from the attic!) and the suspenseful question of who the murderer could be are therefore missing. 2. The characters and the script leave much to be desired; a coherent dramatic structure is nowhere to be found. On the plus side, however, "Black Christmas" does have a few things to offer: a truly festively decorated house, whose absurd Christmas lights are captured atmospherically on film; practical and original kills; a not-too-overly-exaggerated gross-out factor post-"Saw"; wonderfully campy flashbacks to little yellow Billy's childhood; and a pleasantly entertaining watch. See more Ash P @AshParth Dec 18 I won't go so far and say that this movie was terrible. It has potential with how that sense of dread settles in along with the background of Billy Lenz. I enjoy the carnage, yet the cast was just bland at times. Not much with the development of the sorority girls except being body bags. If it weren't for studio interference, maybe this movie could've been better. Sadly, it was half-glass empty for me. So I'm gonna give the 2006 Black Christmas five fleshy cookies being baked out of ten. 5/10. Yeah, that's gonna be stuck in my head for a long while. See more Daniel R. @DansTomatoes Dec 14 It's odd to me how many people dislike this version of a Black Christmas. Bob Clark did the original in 1974, and it was a masterpiece of horror. Bob Clark was a big part of this remake and it definitely has a creepy Christmas feel that most holiday horror films struggle to match these days. I suppose it's all about whether you're a true horror fan or an occasional filmgoer. See more Graham S. @grahamsw Dec 13 Does what it says on the tin. This is a well made slasher. Good scares, good gore. And very Christmasy See more Lauren S @MONKS85 Dec 13 LOVE this movie! It's so messed up and a gory good time! The Xmasy atmosphere and camera angles/lighting is top notch. Don't compare this to the original. It's more of a reimagining than a remake anyway. See more Read all reviews
