Critics Consensus

Brighton Rock is a lean noir boasting an appealing trio of stars, but its old-fashioned presentation only reinforces how little it distinguishes itself from the superior original.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Riley is a fine actor but here embodies brooding paranoia and cruelty on such a single note, he's as much EastEnders villain as anything. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Kaleem Aftab Independent (UK) Having to follow in the footsteps of Attenborough is an albatross around Sam Riley's neck. May 15, 2018 Full Review David Thomson The New Republic Drab in color, with very little of Brighton-they shot in neighboring Eastbourne, apparently because Brighton is too posh now to be its old self. Jun 24, 2013 Full Review James McMahon NME (New Musical Express) Few would say Joffe's take is the definite version of Greene's classic, but perhaps that fact suggests that somewhere between the two lays an adaption that's getting close to being so. Rated: 3/5 May 25, 2021 Full Review Kelly Jane Torrance Washington Examiner We should at least give [director] Rowan Joffe credit for taking a risk -- even if his version of Brighton Rock doesn't approach the achievement of its two predecessors. Rated: 3/4 Jan 8, 2019 Full Review Sarah Manvel Kamera.co.uk If director Rowan Joffe had seized the moment and update the story to the present, it would have been so much more interesting. colin m Weak, not very enjoyable movie remake. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review psychedelic xylophone What a load of piffle. Set in a time when i wasn't around but i know better as what makes a film/movie based during the 60's. Mod culture was mainly about the fashion and prevalent music scene. This was all set in a modern gangster like with a bit of lovey duvey. There wasn't many actors in it. It's too empty!!! The story seems bland and just goes around in a circle with the odd whisper. You may as well watch an episode of eastenders if your here in the uk. And i may as well of watched the krays. If you enjoyed this then you'll love the remake of the sweeney. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/19/22 Full Review Audience Member Why does Rose have to be so dim-witted to watch Pinkie combust? Her character was so passive and dull that it brought the entire point of the flick down to a pathetic dirge. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Ethan T Haven't seen the Richard Attenborough film, or read the book, so take this opinion with a grain of salt. Riseborough shines in her role as a young, plain, religious woman gone astray. Yes, her character seems implausible, but Riseborough's vulnerability and fragilely wilted performance fits the film well. Apparently Carey Mulligan, a favourite of mine, was in line for the role, but Riseborough is more than an able deputy. Sam Riley, on the other hand, is a bit scowly and hard to watch, with no evident shred of humanity. Seeing Helen Mirren, John Hurt, and Andy Serkis pop up does the film some good but also accentuates how boring Riley and his interpretation of the character are. The plot's simplicity loses you by a certain point, as the characters do not advance in the slightest. It really is unfortunate, because the film always hints at compelling scenarios without quite providing them and provides some nice scenery. The bleak final scene, though, is an immense highlight and serves to show that this one had something about it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/01/21 Full Review charlie l It's a fine idea but the plot is simply not focused enough. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Very different but maybe more coherent than the over rated book.. I can't say I enjoyed but it was a reasonable film.
