Linda Deutsch Associated Press Brubaker is a grim, often powerful prison movie based on the true story of convict torture and mass murder in a Southern penitentiary. Mar 4, 2019 Full Review Michael Blowen Boston Globe Brubaker is a dramatic movie with a social conscience and a welcome change from the primarily fluffy-headed film fare of the summer of 1980. Apr 28, 2018 Full Review Gary Arnold Washington Post ... a vivid, entertaining and shamelessly manipulative "crusading" melodrama about the impact of a reform warden on a barbarous penal institution. Oct 17, 2017 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews It's interesting to note that Brubaker, before it devotes itself entirely to the protagonist's exploits, boasts a first act revolving around the happenings within the central penitentiary... Rated: 2/4 Mar 4, 2019 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy [UPDATED 2025 STREAMING REVIEW] The first half-hour is powerful stuff, but after Brubaker reveals his true identity, the movie begins to falter. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 9, 2013 Full Review James Plath Movie Metropolis I never felt that I was wasting my time watching 'Brubaker,' only that it could have been a more dramatic and taut prison movie-which is odd, because it's directed by Stuart Rosenberg ('Cool Hand Luke'). chris m promising, but not good enough. 'brubaker' begins with an almost perfect introduction, managing to situate the viewer both in the space and among the characters, clearly establishing the tone and atmosphere of the story. while watching it, i couldn’t help but think of 'the shawshank redemption', even though the latter was released years later; the comparison arises almost inevitably due to the premise and prison atmosphere they share. robert redford delivers a remarkable performance, solid and convincing, carrying much of the film. the soundtrack, however, serves its purpose in supporting the narrative but is unlikely to be memorable for the audience. the plot is well-developed and written, showing a coherent and structured script, though despite its quality, it doesn’t quite engage with the intensity its premise could have promised. it is important to clarify that i enjoy slow-paced cinema, but in this case the story doesn’t quite help. unlike films like 'the godfather', which, despite being long and slow, maintain a tremendously interesting rhythm and plot, 'brubaker' can feel somewhat uneven in its development, causing interest to wane as it progresses. nevertheless, it combines strong performances and a solid narrative, even if it doesn’t reach the emotional or narrative impact that other films in the same genre have achieved. spanish: prometedora, pero no suficientemente buena. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/19/25 Full Review Stephen C Success in 2 hours and 12 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All ages admitted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/16/25 Full Review Vincent S. The cast sells this sometimes compelling, sometimes meandering drama. A good message film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/22/25 Full Review Sarfaraz A The 1969 book "Accomplices to the Crime: The Arkansas Prison Scandal" by Joe Hyams and Tom Murton, which details Tom Murton's discovery of prison corruption in the late 1960s, served as the basis for this prison film, which was directed by Stuart Rosenberg (Cool Hand Luke) and starred Robert Redford (in the title role), among others. Robert portrays a 40-year-old prisoner who arrives in a penitentiary where he witnesses illegal activities, inhumane treatment of convicts, and senior management engaged in grafting, corruption, and looting government property intended for the prison and its inmates for themselves. It is later revealed that Brubaker is a new warden dispatched by the state governor's female aide to improve the prison and make things appear good for his forthcoming election. Unbeknownst to the governor and his adviser, who is close to Brubaker, the new warden intends to restructure the jail in accordance with the constitution, the rule of law, and human rights. The film does not reveal Brubaker's history, whether he is married, or what he was doing before accepting the role of warden. There is no need to focus on acting. Stuart employed performers from Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) in his two prison films, Cool Hand Luke (Paul Newman) and Brubaker. The film focuses on corruption not just in jail, but also in elected officials' offices. There is nothing satisfying at the conclusion. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Nicole F I often recommend this movie to my students, as it is a gem. It depicts a man’s struggle against the status quo, his stuborness, determination and refusal to bend, which leaves you with a question, if he did the right thing, in the long run. The ending is superb. Redford can act with just a tiny pull of his lips, and and reveal a tornado of inner emotions. Not to miss. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Audience Member Superb, man against the system film that is one of Redford’s best. Brings up important issues regarding how to treat prisoners as wards of the state. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Read all reviews
