Audience Member Pre-Code and funnier for it. This is one of the funniest L&H's. Mae Busch as a hilariously brutal vamp and the always funny Thelma Todd. 4 stars cos I LOL'd multiple times. If you like this, don't miss 'Politiquerias', a longer Spanish version that has a scene involving a bizarre magician who swallows and regurgitates huge amounts of water, hazelnuts and kerosene, and has to be seen to be believed. This short's a graft thriller with a hint of farcical noir (there's a gun, an innocent blonde, and a dark-haired floozy), and it doesn't really work... The leads were never really allowed to be in tune with the fairer sex, but the women here (as in so many modern American comedies) are all vamps or whingers who need to be deceived or vanquished. The odd sight gag (such as the other woman raised up on Ollie's shoulders) and Finlayson's double-takes stick, but the whole plot's a tenuous house of cards: to want the boys to get away with it, we have to believe Ollie would make a good mayor in the first place.
