      Critics Consensus

Creepy lives up to its title with a suspenseful and thoroughly unsettling - not to mention well-acted - blend of crime procedural and domestic drama.

Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses One of the best horror films of the year and probably the best serial killer film of the last decade, Creepy is Kurosawa's greatest achievement and Japanese genre cinema at its finest. Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Michael Nordine indieWire Little that happens in Creepy is surprising, but even less is unsatisfying. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Jordan Brooks Vague Visages Creepy is a film that takes its titular feeling to frightening new heights, and Kurosawa’s game of bait-and-switch intensely compounds when acted out alongside his mastery of tension. Aug 1, 2023 Full Review Pieter-Jan Van Haecke Psychocinematography Kurosawa shows, in masterful way, that creepiness lurks at the surface of society, just behind the façade of daily life, hidden in plain sight. James S If you watched Cure before heading into Creepy, you might do what I did and spend much of the runtime crediting this film with more depth and intelligence than it really possesses. The cinematography, sound design and moment-to-moment acting is fine, but this film lacks the conviction of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's more lauded works. The characters are odd and almost never react appropriately to what is going on. Several plot points seem promising but lead down frustratingly short paths. I had hoped the overall weirdness was all in service of an interesting big reveal, but the explanation we get is so broadly ineffectual it exposes the rest of the story as a puzzling, rushed mess. This film recycles so much from Cure and pulls out tired crime thriller clichés with such frequency that it's hard not to see it as a fall from grace. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/14/23 Full Review Steve C I will tell you what's creepy. How hopelessly and frustratingly stupid the characters are in this movie, aside from the protagonist, to fall for such a transparent antagonist. Aside from that, for a thriller, it's all right. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Very interesting character driven movie. Keeps your interest and keeps you guessing. I would recommend it to others. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/03/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a character-driven movie, not a ghost or monster movie. It's a fatal flaw, then, that the characters make no sense. The plot is consistently advanced by characters behaving in inexplicably bizarre ways. Why would a police detective use violent, intimidating tactics to try to extract information from a witness who was a juvenile and already declared unreliable by the courts - while simultaneously completely ignoring a credible, easily investigable tip about the very same crime? Why would a woman become deeply involved in the life of a weird, creepy man, while never giving any indication that she likes or trusts him at all? I can't say much more without giving spoilers, but nothing that happens in this movie makes any sense at all. I'm surprised most people don't seem to have noticed this. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Daniel W One of the best psychological thrillers I've seen recently, Creepy is intriguing, suspenseful, and, above all, creepy. Kurosowa uses a patient, slow-burn approach at first and expertly creates tension through character development. The slow burn pays off in the last third of the film, which morphs a la Silence of the Lambs from detective story to horror. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/21 Full Review greg s A tense, intense movie experience. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
