DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD 6d Carrying with it those familiar themes of brothers-at-arms and the bonds of fellowship that run through so many Shaw Brothers films, Five Shaolin Masters is certainly a long fought battle amidst this struggle for survival. It's certainly a tipping point for its creative team, serving as a relatively lean martial arts showcase for its stars while also marking the last collaboration between director Chang Cheh and action choreographer Lau Kar-Leung before they went their separate ways. It undoubtedly spreads its attention too thin in attempting to balance the five main leads' screen time; it unfortunately drags its feet for a lot of the runtime with long stretches of minimal activity occasionally interspersed with extended martial arts sequences that, while impressive, border on the repetitive, even exhausting. Despite my niggles, Five Shaolin Masters is still very much worth a watch; it may stand as a rather influential piece of kung fu cinema, but it takes ages to really get going. See more 05/30/2016 One of the worst shaw brothers films in my opinion. Action is less impressive than others and it suffers from being dull. See more 05/30/2016 Director Cheh Chang and The Venoms milk their successful formula once again in this story about five students who seek recent on those who destroyed their beloved Shaolin Temple, each of them learning their own fighting style to become the titular Five Shaolin Masters. As with most of Chang and The Venoms' films, the story is not much to speak of, but the fights are excellent. After watching several of their films recently, I've noticed one thing they do well is that all of the fight are consistently good, but they always make sure the final fight sequence is always the best. This sounds small, but it's something that's ruined many films. My favorite example of this is "Blade," which was ruined by the bloodbath vampire rave opening scene because nothing else after that lived up to those first moments. Starring Gordon Liu and Ti Lung, with action choreography by Lau Kar Leung, this is another solid martial arts picture from The Venoms. See more 02/06/2016 Five Shaolin Masters has that familiar theme that runs through many Shaw Brothers film of brothers-at-arms and the bonds of fellowship even as Chang Cheh throws so many martial arts fight scenes into this film that it would satiate even the most ravenous kung-fu film buff. The acting runs the gamut, but each actor more or less plays their best character-type: David Chaing as the stoic hero, Ti Lung as another stoic hero, Chaing Tao as a villainous douchebag, and Fung Hark-On as the bad guy badass. The only problem I had was with Alexander Fu Sheng, who always looked as if he was too hot, and never really bothers to wear a shirt, which he seems to opt out of for any film he makes. Câ??mon Alex, those abs arenâ??t that great! His character irked me the entire film, which may have been the intent, as he acted like a knucklehead, and an overconfident knucklehead at that. Iâ??m convinced Cheh knew this as whenever Fu Sheng fights he gets some children-sounding music that seems to say â?? yes, heâ??s the comedy relief of this filmâ??. Gordon Liu has a cameo, and looked like he stumbled on set from a different film, and they just decided to use him in this one. See more Read all reviews
