The age old format of betrayal, defeat, retrain and revenge plays out well with an emotional finale.

One of the worst shaw brothers films in my opinion. Action is less impressive than others and it suffers from being dull.

Director Cheh Chang and The Venoms milk their successful formula once again in this story about five students who seek recent on those who destroyed their beloved Shaolin Temple, each of them learning their own fighting style to become the titular Five Shaolin Masters. As with most of Chang and The Venoms' films, the story is not much to speak of, but the fights are excellent. After watching several of their films recently, I've noticed one thing they do well is that all of the fight are consistently good, but they always make sure the final fight sequence is always the best. This sounds small, but it's something that's ruined many films. My favorite example of this is "Blade," which was ruined by the bloodbath vampire rave opening scene because nothing else after that lived up to those first moments. Starring Gordon Liu and Ti Lung, with action choreography by Lau Kar Leung, this is another solid martial arts picture from The Venoms.

Five Shaolin Masters has that familiar theme that runs through many Shaw Brothers film of brothers-at-arms and the bonds of fellowship even as Chang Cheh throws so many martial arts fight scenes into this film that it would satiate even the most ravenous kung-fu film buff. The acting runs the gamut, but each actor more or less plays their best character-type: David Chaing as the stoic hero, Ti Lung as another stoic hero, Chaing Tao as a villainous douchebag, and Fung Hark-On as the bad guy badass. The only problem I had was with Alexander Fu Sheng, who always looked as if he was too hot, and never really bothers to wear a shirt, which he seems to opt out of for any film he makes. Câ??mon Alex, those abs arenâ??t that great! His character irked me the entire film, which may have been the intent, as he acted like a knucklehead, and an overconfident knucklehead at that. Iâ??m convinced Cheh knew this as whenever Fu Sheng fights he gets some children-sounding music that seems to say â?? yes, heâ??s the comedy relief of this filmâ??. Gordon Liu has a cameo, and looked like he stumbled on set from a different film, and they just decided to use him in this one.

They have to take the bait.
The Manchu have lead an uprising in China that led to an epic battle with the Shaolin that they ultimately won. They crushed all of the Shaolin temples and ultimately almost all of their people. They quickly take grip of the Chinese culture. Five Shaolin masters band together and start recruiting talent to face the Manchu and take back the country from the ruthless Manchu masters.
"This pole has been scorched."
"That's good. When I hold it, it will remind me of how much I hate them."
Cheh Chang, director of Five Deadly Venoms, Invincible Shaolin, Crippled Avengers, The Magnificent Ruffians, The Flag of Iron, The Masked Avengers, and House of Traps, delivers 5 Shaolin Masters. The storyline for this picture is very well executed and delivered, especially for the genre. The action is awesome as is each choreographed scenes. The acting is awesome and the cast includes David Chiang, Lung Ti, Sheng Fu, Fei Meng, and Lung Wei Wang.
"A man is complex."
This was recently added to the Netflix online queue so I had to add it to the wish list. This was a marvelous martial arts gem that is definitely a must see for fans of the genre. This was better than the Brave Archer pictures and in-line with the Venom films. I strongly recommend seeing this underrated gem if you are a fan of the genre.
