Cees T Explicit violence and drug use, but censored nipples despite the Batman:TAS style. 5.6/10 - Nice butts, but tonal clashes galore. Watch Heavy Metal and Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie instead. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Anderson O Great superhero adaptation from my childhood for DC Wildstorm. Still stands the test of time.a very emotional family drama with humor, charisma, wit, debonair, immaturity, and depth. More than I was expecting of a coming of age superhero team origin. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Gen13 isn't bad, it just feels more like a decent-ish backdoor pilot for a TV show that was never picked up - I blame the sin of greed thanks to the Disney/Warner Bros. fiasco that led to the movie never getting released in the U.S. - than an origin story for a super team that were popular in the '90s. The animation is good, the action sequences are well-done, the narrative isn't that bad and I do think this movie has respect for its source material. Plus, I admire an animated superhero movie that doesn't pull its punches, veering a thin line between PG-13 and R, making it all the more surprising that Disney distributed this film, albeit through their Touchstone Pictures banner. But the voice acting is inconsistent (in one scene, I felt John de Lancie's vocal performance didn't match with the way the scene is drawn, suggesting the scene was being animated with a more pissed tone of voice in mind rather than the tranquil fury Q from Star Trek: TNG gives him), one plot twist is far too obvious, sound mixing could've used some polishing and while I couldn't find any reliable information concerning the budget, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was small, considering how the majority of the movie is set in one location and once Caitlin's powers manifest, the cast is limited to the main trio, villains, mooks and John de Lancie. The scene that demonstrates this suspected small DTV budget the most is a scene with a character from the comics (yes I know, unlike all those original characters the movie made up) named Sarah Rainmaker, a Native American lesbian trying to get out of her room...and we never see her again, confusing the hell out of people unfamiliar with the comics. My point is, it made the place feel depressingly empty once the ass-kicking begins. While Gen13 offers a good bit of escapism, the feeling that it was less of a movie and more of a glorified set-up for a TV show took me out of it and made me all the more sad that, due to the aforementioned Disney and WB not wanting to share their money, we never got a chance to see this group'd adventures continue in another format, potentially even leave a Batman: TAS impact on superhero television. But alas, you can't always get what you want. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review steve d Although I miss some of the marginalized characters, Gen13 fans should have a lot of fun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member It was alright, but it could have been so much more. This film could have revolutionized the film industry 20 years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but via animation at a time when CGI just would not cut it.
