What to Know

Critics Consensus

Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics is an entertaining enough look at hallucinogenics' effects, but its shallow treatment can't help but disappoint.

Danny Leigh Financial Times Anyone hoping Donick Cary's film might lead to the wider, weirder history of the subject matter - the CIA, youth culture, so on - will be disappointed. Rated: 2/5 May 20, 2020 Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post "Good Trip" aims to entertain, not educate, as it presents a star-studded parade of celebrity reminiscences about taking hallucinogenic drugs. Mostly, it succeeds. Rated: 2.5/4 May 18, 2020 Full Review Charles Bramesco AV Club Like listening to someone recount a dream, these anecdotes primarily give the impression that you had to be there (and in that state of mind) to get it. Rated: C May 14, 2020 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix The documentary's filmmakers (including director Donick Cary) made the morbid and tacky decision to display the filmmakers' interviews with Carrie Fisher and Anthony Bourdain in this parade of celebrities who mostly glamorize taking psychedelic drugs. Jul 18, 2020 Full Review Alejandro Lingenti La Nación (Argentina) It works well as a hobby, but the idea itself that had potential was only half developed. Arjuna R Some critics completely miss the point on this. It isn’t to glamorize “drugs”. It’s to normalize psychedelics. I’d recommend do your research before clumping the two together. Yes the goal is to spread awareness about the benefits and potential pitfalls of psychedelics. Ultimately it’s our own consciousness and freedom includes the right to experiment with it. Personally, mushrooms saved my life. You’ll hear many people say this and it’s no exaggeration. Keep fighting the good fight! Can’t wait for part 2! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review teri w We had a fun evening, laughter out loud, really really laught Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Audience Member A refreshing take on the questions surrounding psychedelics. A positive and favorable look at these amazing substances; that also does not stray away from talking about the negative side of the debate. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member passed time but it was an awful movie with god-awful animation quality, too strong a focus on celebrities rather than people with actually interesting things to say, and a weird habit of framing psychedelics as inherently dangerous and awful when the problem is a drastic lack of education and safety procedures around drugs. if a bunch of rich hollywood guys tried to drive a car on acid 40 years ago, that's their problem Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie does an amazing job of explaining these drugs. If you are looking for a funny, silly, and yet informative film, then I suggest you watch this film. Many people share their stories in the film, they give descriptions of good trips and bad trips. They shine a light on these drugs that is very unusual. Most films denounce these drugs but this does not, instead it suggests that if you are up to it, everyone should try it at least once in there life. So overall this film is short and sweet, and I would highly recommend it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The people who didn't like this documentary are basically a bunch of boring, tight-ass Nancy Reagans. This is a super fun film, and anyone whose every been adventurous enough to try psychedelics will understand and enjoy it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
