Don E Wrongly criticized for years, this may not be a classic but it is an entertaining movie and not an embarrassment to Hemingway or his work. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review alvin a I agree with the reviewers, mostly. but in context of time. There were so many deep. moving movies coming out in the late 60s and 70s as we went through a world wide social moral review of ourselves. I just rewatched this and was.stunned at Paul Newman who was such a great actor but was also a major Hunk and often pretty.men and women are played off in movies more for their looks. But thus wasn not a glamorous role. It was a heartfelt. soulful role and after years and years of mostly splashy comic book movies made up for cash first. this movie was a breath of fresh air and worth the watch if you haven't seen it. I was annoyed at the reviewers who.found it necessary to.dismiss Richard Beymer for his looks. It is entertaining to see a movie where people weren't flying or using magic to solve their problems. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review steve d Only a few cameos give it any life. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie has long been a guilty pleasure of mine. It's an all-star cast, and even through Richard Beymer is not the strongest of dramatic actors, he handles the rold well enough. This is made up of Heminway short stories involving Nick Adams, although it seems apparent one of those stories was the basis for "A Farewell to Arms." Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man (1962) -- [7.0] -- Richard Beymer (West Side Story) stars as Hemingway's alter-ego, a young man coming of age in the early 1900s. With beautiful scenery of rural Michigan and Franz Waxman's wistful score, the film is unabashedly romantic and nostalgic -- it transports you to a time and place you're reluctant to leave. But as Beymer sets off to sew his wild oats, the narrative suffers the fate of nearly all episodic storylines. Some of the stories are better than others. Paul Newman has the film's standout supporting performance as a retired prizefighter who's taken one too many blows to the head. Ricardo Montalban and Eli Wallach are also memorable as World War I comrades. My favorite scene is one where Montalban and Wallach get Beymer drunk in his hospital bed. The impressive cast also includes Arthur Kennedy and Jessica Tandy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Variety Staff Variety While the film has been executed with concern, integrity and respect for the pen from which it flows, it has a disquieting tendency to oscillate between flashes of artistry and truth and interludes of mechanics and melodramatics. Feb 23, 2012 Full Review Pauline Kael Film Quarterly I think it is a disgrace and a moral offense to take short stories by Hemingway and a piece of a novel and combine them with incidents from his life in a sentimental pastiche which is then presented as some sort of biographical film. Sep 11, 2023 Full Review Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine There are a few virtuoso cameos, notably Paul Newman's sketch of a punchdrunk fighter, but Richard Beymer is too pale and pretty to be convincing in the central role. Oct 7, 2019 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Based on Hemingway's short stories, Martin Ritt's chronicle is long, rambling, disappointing film in which Richard Beymer is miscast as the young novelist.
