Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Inspired by true events, Douglas Sirk's first American film is a powerful tale of the Czech resistance in WWII, with John Carradine as the vicious Nazi commander. andy f The most incredible thing about this movie is that it was filmed and released so quickly after the events it depicts. WWII was still raging upon this film's release, yet this tale of Heydrich's assassination and the horrific aftermath plays out with some hope. Cheesy in places, the film ultimately triumphs and shocks. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Very true and very real, it was real life film, it must have been very hard and emotional for the actors to stand tall at that time. I admire the entire cast and crew. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Douglas Sirk was still establishing himself as director in America after fleeing German when he made this nifty bit of WWII propaganda. John Carradine chews the scenery as a sneering Nazi officer, the real-life Reinhard Heydrich, Nazi governor of Prague. This film is based upon true event, though I'm a bit dubious of the film's historical accuracy. However, dramatically the film is exciting, fast paced, and features some well drawn characters. Made on the cheap at a poverty row studio, this film was picked-up by MGM who then gave the film a much larger release. Overall, this is nowhere as great as Sirk's later films, but it is a tight and highly enjoyable little film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Propaganda-minded B-movie is an early effort from director Douglas Sirk. There are a handful of interesting and fairly exploitative scenes of Nazi cruelty, with the Nazi villain played aptly by B-movie icon John Carradine, but they're spaced out thin in an otherwise bland potboiler. More interesting as a historical document than a film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
