Critics Consensus

Bearing only the slightest resemblance to Isaac Asimov's short stories, I, Robot is still a summer blockbuster that manages to make viewers think -- if only a little.

Leaving aside the sub-Matrix hokum about Spooner's sweet-potato-loving grandmom, the movie humiliates itself - and embarrasses us - by the amount of time it spends plugging a glamorous car... Go to Full Review

Snowhite S 9h I would give it 4 stars if it wasn't for Will Smith's cockyness and silly one liners...AND that silly crooked hat! Could have been shorter too. Overall, a comfort ostalgic 90's, early 00's watch 👍 See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 6d Will Smith brings a confident, energetic presence to I, Robot, a film that blends science fiction, action, and philosophical curiosity into a sleek summer blockbuster. From the moment he steps into the role of Detective Del Spooner, Smith anchors the story with charisma and emotional grounding, turning a tech-heavy narrative about autonomous robots into something immediate and engaging. His performance gives the world a sense of lived-in authenticity, and he elevates every scene with a mix of sharp humor and genuine urgency. What stands out the most is how much fun the film is, even when it leans into darker themes. The screenplay isn’t flawless, but it’s undeniably entertaining, balancing action sequences with mystery elements while never losing sight of its central question: what happens when humanity depends too much on the machines it creates? The film hits all the beats it needs to hit, developing a futuristic society that feels both imaginative and strangely plausible. The direction helps solidify that tone. Working from Isaac Asimov’s concepts, the director crafts a world where technology is polished, enticing, and quietly dangerous. The execution isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s solid. There’s a clear commitment to world-building, and the visuals carry a sense of scale that enhances the film’s larger ideas. It’s easy to see why I, Robot remains so recognizable — its world feels distinctive even today. While some story elements feel predictable or simplified, the film never stops being enjoyable. Smith’s performance plays a big part in that, but the supporting cast, the robotics designs, and the kinetic set pieces all contribute to a film that moves quickly and keeps viewers pulled into its momentum. Even when the plot leans heavily on familiar sci-fi tropes, it maintains an energy that keeps audiences engaged. The movie’s real success is that it never promises to be more than what it is. It’s a fun, fast-paced sci-fi thriller with a likable lead and a world worth exploring. It doesn’t try to reinvent the genre, but it doesn’t need to — it delivers excitement, spectacle, and a touch of philosophical intrigue without getting bogged down in its own ideas. Ultimately, I, Robot is an entertaining and accessible entry into mainstream science fiction, offering enough action, personality, and visual flair to satisfy casual viewers and fans of the genre alike. It’s not a masterpiece, but it doesn’t have to be; it’s a fun ride that embraces its concept and gives audiences plenty to enjoy. I recommend it for anyone looking for a smart, lively sci-fi adventure that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Rated PG-13 for Intense Stylized Action and Brief Partial Nudity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more K G Oct 5 Damn, that was a great 2000s action movie. This is just like "Spy Kids", a spy must fight against evil robots. Whilst the CGI robots may not be great-looking, they are still better than the effects from "Spy Kids" or a Disney live-action remake most of the time. Even the effects & action was superior: the dream of Del Spooner in a car underwater with Sarah screaming, that just felt so like they were realisticly underwater, unlike "The Little Mermaid" live action. Those camera effects whenever they fought with he robots felt like a POV, the camera was moving so fast & many absurd ways, so I will give credit for that. And it was very interesting that was one robot (Sonny) who did have human feelings - remember, this is not ripping Pixar's "Wall-E" because "I, Robot" was made before "Wall-E" & they have very different plots. And I enjoyed the OST right from the start. After all, let's rematch this someday. See more Read all reviews
