Trevor Johnston Time Out Bergman's second feature is a playful but rather ill-advised blend of rainswept miserablism and laborious whimsy. Audience Member I watched It Rains on Our Love largely as a curiosity - because it is a Bergman and because it is one of his earliest and also because it was based on a play so a good comparison for Ordet (a recent film I watched). After some of the rather fantastic and unusual films we have been watching it was quite nice to watch something "normal". I found It Rains.. to be a straightforward and simply human story and quite lovely albeit in an unremarkable way. Whilst Ordet felt completely like a play that had been filmed I would not have guessed It Rains was based on a play at all, maybe it was intentional to give Ordet that feel or maybe Bergman just put in more effort and did a better job with the screenplay conversion, who knows, although I really liked Ordet for what it was It Rains works better as a 'movie'. I cannot really criticise this film, it was enjoyable and warming to watch at the same time it was not really anything greatly special, it lacked the deeper philosophical tones and complexity (and perhaps maturity) of Bergman's later and more famous works but at the same time I really saw the early roots of what sets Bergman apart - his intense interest in humanity and the human condition - and it was nice to see it presented in it's fresh faced youth and naive vibrancy here. So overall I am happy to have seen the film and did enjoy it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Fra B The movie is classic and fine, but what's interesting is that surprisingly Bergman was first a talented director than a particularly good screenwriter, I think you would expect the other way around. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/06/21 Full Review Audience Member This is a romantic and exciting feel-good movie about a lovable naive couple with a questionable background, trying to start all over together and adapt themselves to the society. The young star director Ingmar Bergman here effectively portrays typically good and bad sides of the human behaviour. The main theme returns over and over again - how do people live with their past, and how do they handle the resulting conflicts and moral dilemmas? Despite the age of this movie (released in 1946) it does not feel old fashioned in any way. Common to Bergman's movies to come, this one is way ahead of its time. The story and acting feel just as fresh as any modern movie and is a pure enjoyment to watch, without any boring or embarrassing moments. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member The romance between the two leads has an incredibly unconvincing start, although the chemistry is believable enough later on. The angel and devil characters are extremely obvious, yet Bergman felt it necessary to point it out in the ending dialogue. The humor in the movie is really goofy and rarely works, and the messages are too blunt. There is a pleasant sweetness to it, and the acting is pretty good. But it's too much like a Hollywood ripoff, there's little of Bergman's soul in it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a very rare Ingmar Bergman-movie: A feelgood-comedy with happy-end! Great performances by Birger Malmsten and Barbro Kollberg; a couple fighting for a good life against bourgeouis, the church and authorities. Ingmars second movie, shot 1946. He was not satisfied, but the public was! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member five star is definitely not enough!!!perfect..!!
