Ultimately, the willful obfuscation becomes more frustrating than entertaining. Go to Full Review

Hideo helms with such style and suspense that it doesn't matter if all our questions are ultimately answered. Go to Full Review

The film's mechanical workings are still impressive, but between the unsympathetic characters and the coldly precise direction, there is little here for an audience to clutch to its heart. Go to Full Review

[Hideo Nakata's] perverse talent is very much in evidence here. The film does however fall apart towards the end and is undermined by an overwhelming sense of déjá vu. A fascinating early installment from this director nonetheless. Go to Full Review

Go to Full Review

03/23/2011 Japanese thriller that starts off as your typical kidnapping flick but then quickly develops one of the most complex plots I've ever seen in a film from any continent. It demands your complete attention because if your mind strays for too long you will become very confused. There's double and triple-crosses and some of the story is revealed in flashbacks. But despite all the plot twists it's a pretty slow-paced movie with little on-screen excitement - a million miles away from the likes of Ron Howard's 'Ransom'. It's a unique and original little film from Hideo Nakata, the director of 'Ringu' and 'Dark Water, and it's worth a watch if you have the patience. See more 07/01/2009 Very complicated thriller. Lots of twists and turns and it's a great ride. See more 05/16/2009 While it's going for the constant surprise angle, the problem is that the initial twists are generic, and the later twists are the most logical and obvious ones the director would have chosen. Except for the end, but that was less a twist and more of a total surrender to totally not caring what was going on. Add lackluster characters and cinematography, and you have a movie that no one would have cared about, save for the director's overrated pedigree. See more 03/21/2009 Hideo Nakata's Chaos indeed depicts some chaotic goings on but its structure, its narrative is carefully crafted and a joy to watch. Chaos may not live up to its premise fully but it remains compelling from start to finish with enough twists and turns to keep you hooked. It loses pace towards the end but overall this is a solid, clever little thriller. See more 12/09/2008 Very gentle thriller by Japanese standards, with enough twists and turns to make the mind boggle. See more Read all reviews
