      Critics Consensus

Knowing has some interesting ideas and a couple good scenes, but it's weighted down by its absurd plot and over-seriousness.

Daniel B A brilliant concept, strong first half and great performance from Cage can't save the film from it's own ending which is just utterly nonsensical. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review Dan R 2009's 'Knowing' sees Nic Cage return in another crazy, and maybe absurd, sci-fi drama. SYNOPSIS: 'M.I.T. professor John Koestler links a mysterious list of numbers from a time capsule to past and future disasters and sets out to prevent the ultimate catastrophe.' I'm sure I've criticised Cage in the past for his choice of films and performances, but in hindsight I'm starting to think he's some sort of genius and he's just enjoying being an actor. 'Knowing' has an interesting idea for a story even if it's, as mentioned above, absurd. But this is a mainstream Hollywood movie so being absurd is allowed. Also, as an apocalyptic movie, it's right up my street. Cage himself is actually quite restrained in this role and really delivers as an academic who's also broken from the loss of his wife. It's not a great film but also it's not terrible. It's a middle of the road apocalyptic film but it does deliver in its conclusion. We get the grim conclusion, the end of the world, the end of it all. Where the film does let itself down is the terrible CGI effects and the Corridor Crew have done a full episode on this film, and especially 'that' scene. A big creepy sci-fi thriller. 6/10 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Hudson D Um ótimo filme, gostei muito Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Rick M One of the best 'sci-fi' movies I've ever seen. Intelligent, gripping, and in a unique way, profound and inspirational. Love the use of Beethoven's 7th Symphony 2nd movement, and the religious overtones. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Victor P The movie does have good scenes, impressive special effects, the atmosphere, and Nicholas Cage does a good performance, but the plot is so preposterous with too much implausibility and I was letdown by the ending. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Michael E great sci-fi movie! Cage is excellent, great end of civilization drama Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online ... I was dozing off... Rated: F Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Jordan Hoffman UGO Knowing feels like a bunch of cool ideas that were strewn about a table, picked up, shoved together, tied up with duct tape and, somehow, managed to stay working for the ride. Rated: B Aug 14, 2009 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Rather like watching an intricately arranged set of dominos starting to topple. That's neat. I didn't see that one coming, you think, as yet another train carriage joins the pile-up. Rated: 2/5 Apr 3, 2009 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The result should not be dismissed as an average thriller, and yet, seen in those terms, it still succeeds because Proyas is a superior director, and after several missteps, he has finally redeemed himself with another fine piece of science fiction. Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 2, 2023 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine Here, normality is affected by tragedy and reality acquires a mystical sheen where the inexplicable takes over what's rational.
