Critics Consensus

Knowing has some interesting ideas and a couple good scenes, but it's weighted down by its absurd plot and over-seriousness.

Rated: F Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Jordan Hoffman UGO Knowing feels like a bunch of cool ideas that were strewn about a table, picked up, shoved together, tied up with duct tape and, somehow, managed to stay working for the ride. Rated: B Aug 14, 2009 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Rather like watching an intricately arranged set of dominos starting to topple. That's neat. I didn't see that one coming, you think, as yet another train carriage joins the pile-up. Rated: 2/5 Apr 3, 2009 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The result should not be dismissed as an average thriller, and yet, seen in those terms, it still succeeds because Proyas is a superior director, and after several missteps, he has finally redeemed himself with another fine piece of science fiction. Zachary Jacob S Honestly enjoyable! Yes, maybe a bit ridiculous in some spots, but if you just accept the story, it's engaging, and has some deep moments. I like it overall! Not the greatest thing ever, but I recommend at least watching it once! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Tony O I saw this movie when it came out in 2009 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great special effects and as with all sci fi movies leave your brain in the car and enjoy the ride. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Ralph R "Knowing" (2009) is one of those movies that grabs your attention with an intriguing concept and keeps you hooked with its mystery and suspense. The plot, while ambitious and unique, sometimes feels like it bites off more than it can chew, especially with character depth and emotional weight. The film builds tension effectively but doesn't always make you feel invested in the people involved. Nicolas Cage delivers a solid performance, carrying the film with his usual mix of intensity and brooding energy. The directing by Alex Proyas is well-executed, creating an eerie, unsettling atmosphere that keeps things engaging. Visually, the cinematography does a great job of amplifying the film's apocalyptic themes, with some standout sequences that are both haunting and well-shot. The CGI, though not perfect, holds up for the most part. The script has its strong moments, especially in its pacing and mystery elements, but it leans heavily on exposition at times, which can make certain parts feel more like a lecture than organic dialogue. The score adds to the eerie and suspenseful tone, effectively building tension in key moments. While the film might not be a masterpiece, it is still an entertaining watch with an interesting premise, good directing, and some genuinely tense moments. If you go in without expecting deep character exploration and just want a gripping mystery with a bit of a sci-fi twist, it’s definitely worth a watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Carter J I saw this movie on Tiktok and decided to give it a watch. Was disappointed. I thought the main plot of the paper full of details of various events was interesting but not executed well. The way that new details were just added with no prior background was annoying to me. Example of this is at the end when John just suddenly had written a report on a solar flare and connected it to a foreshadowing event and said to his colleague “oh by the way, you have one day left to live before we all die.” I also feel how the “whisper people” knew about these events and why they wrote down the numbers was not explained. Overall the plot to this movie was decent but not executed or explained well. I would give it a 5 out of 10. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Audience Member Nothing too special, but it did have me wondering what was going on a few times. Not a satisfying ending, but I found it interesting to a point. Okay, but not great. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Martin M I absolutely loved this movie. The only drawback is that it starts off quite slow and ends too abruptly. An extra hour would have allowed for a more complete resolution of the plot. Despite this, it’s an absolute must watch.
