Audience Member This is a good film but the topic depicted in it is far from being pleasant. The story of a poor unfortunate girl forced to enter a convent where she is heavily pressure to become a nun and take the veil. Suzanne is being tortured and treated like a disgrace once she starts to question the method of her superior. This is a film about a woman trying to resit the religious values imposed on her and her long fight to gain freedom. It's not going to be the cup of tea of every spectator but the film manages some great images and possess a form of authenticity that makes it definitely interesting. The main actress is really intense which helps making this story all the more compelling. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member As an ex-Catholic, educated in Parochial Schools and an altar boy, rebellious at an early age, I am only too familiar with the guilt and unworthiness feelings so brilliantly portrayed by Suzanne. Marvelous actress. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Potent study of oppression and cruelty ultimately defeated by faith. Pauline Etienne gives an outstanding turn in the lead role and Huppert is given a chance to play a nun! ...of course transgression ensues. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Bullies happening in convents... rather pale however. Nigel Andrews Financial Times Pauline Etienne as the heroine is a harmonising centre, believable, luminous, quiet-spoken, poignant. Rated: 4/5 Nov 7, 2013 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Looks as tasteful as can be but, in terms of emotion, lacks any kind of finesse. Rated: 2/5 Nov 1, 2013 Full Review Sophie Monks Kaufman Little White Lies This Isabelle Huppert drama starts promisingly, but sadly reveals itself as a piece of hackneyed nunsploitation. Rated: 3/5 Oct 31, 2013 Full Review Alexa Dalby Dog and Wolf If only the whole film had maintained this pared-down dramatic aesthetic. Rated: 3/5 Jun 7, 2019 Full Review Ben Nicholson CineVue Nicloux's The Nun is lovely to look at and has given Etienne a chance to shine, which she does with aplomb. Sadly, it doesn't bare too much thinking about. Rated: 2/5 Mar 6, 2019 Full Review Catherine Shoard Observer (UK) It's an affecting and frank take on the loneliness of faith as well as faithlessness, whose horrors come in odd contrast to the plush production values.
