Satirists will acknowledge that satire has never changed human history one bit -
but this is so much more, a hugely entertaining attack on the obscenity of mob rule that goes beyond mockery to become a pragmatic guide for fighting back.
Beyond the hilarious portrayals of Yakuza as insidious, crass, moronic dirtbags, we get a heroine who is so beguiling, brilliant and courageous that you can't take your eyes off her - and through her, embedded in the exposition, is everything that the target audience, the Japanese citizenry, need to know about how to combat targeted harassment by Yakuza groups that take advantage of the Japanese tendency to avoid confrontation in order to "gently extort" money by making a scene with implied threats of violence over trivial matters, in order to exploit and bleed dry businesses.
Minbo no Onna was so effective that the Yakuza lost their minds, and attacked the director before allegedly killing him.

This is a film dealing with a dark theme, the Japanese yakuza. In Hollywood this would be an action-packed thriller, but under Juzo Itami it became a well-paced comedy. Tension is always released periodically through clever conversations or actor' particular actions. The stark contrast of tension-building and comical release several times throughout the movie is most enjoyable. Overall, Minbo no Onna takes a close look at the Japanese yakuza scene without making it too heavy to watch.

gute 3/5

Somehow this movie is listed as a comedy. Don't really see that (although it has a few moments). It's more of a suspense film about the J-mafia trying to extort money out of this fancy hotel in Japan. It's a fairly entertaining picture.
