      Critics Consensus

Monsters: Dark Continent lacks the fresh approach and thought-provoking subtext of its predecessor, settling instead for tired war movie clichés.

J R This is Terrance Mallick's "The Thin Red Line", but with Aliens. And monsters. Like the title tells you it is. And with a poetic narration. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted, and beautifully narrated. If you want to see what human soldiers will do when dealing with semi-hostile alien life-forms that are a result of a meteor strike, this is for you. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/24 Full Review Cinephemeride [ a shaky attempt at a sequel, long, very long, very long which is more of a war film than a real science fiction film Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/13/23 Full Review Laura G This was the absolute worst movie I have ever seen. The writers and producers should write everyone who has ever seen this movie an apology letter. They tried to turn 8 Mile into Jarhead and turn that into Starship Troopers and just made a mess. Rarely see the aliens just guys trying to be macho and being terrible. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Well, what a waste of time. There are monsters in the film but they're used more as a prop. The characters are all extremely obnoxious. The acting was good, but the story is your standard military, USA needing to stick their noses in everything, savior complex kind of movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Here's a movie that has no idea what it wants to be. A war movie? a monster movie? A culture clash movie? The more it tried to cover all 3 interests, the less interesting it was. Actually, a very vapid and dopey movie. Waste of your time watching it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member BAD acting. Camera shake galore. Did I mention bad acting? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/21 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Mark Kermode Observer (UK) The sub-Apocalypse Now existential/colonial angst lacks any form of grounding, despite committed performances from the core cast who engage in much tooth-baring, breast-beating, and shouty soul-searching. Rated: 2/5 May 4, 2015 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) There are some inventive moments along the way, but these are interspersed with lots of posturing, yelling and brawling. Rated: 2/5 Apr 30, 2015 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian One to miss. Rated: 1/5 Apr 30, 2015 Full Review Amanda Waltz The Film Stage Deprived of sympathetic characters, thrills, and Edwards' skilled touch, the film makes for a disappointing follow-up to some impressive sci-fi cinema. Rated: D+ Feb 23, 2016 Full Review Alex Zane The Sun (UK) Basically it's a war movie with four or five shots of giant monsters. The film would be exactly the same without them. And the characters are underwritten and unmemorable. Rated: 2/5 Jan 1, 2016 Full Review David N. Butterworth La Movie Boeuf Monsters are few and far between, and Dark Continent was an offensive name given to Africa by 19th century Europeans, so why exactly this film is called "Monsters: Dark Continent" is anyone's guess.
