Critics Consensus

Monsters: Dark Continent lacks the fresh approach and thought-provoking subtext of its predecessor, settling instead for tired war movie clichés.

The sub-Apocalypse Now existential/colonial angst lacks any form of grounding, despite committed performances from the core cast who engage in much tooth-baring, breast-beating, and shouty soul-searching. Go to Full Review

There are some inventive moments along the way, but these are interspersed with lots of posturing, yelling and brawling. Go to Full Review

Deprived of sympathetic characters, thrills, and Edwards' skilled touch, the film makes for a disappointing follow-up to some impressive sci-fi cinema. Go to Full Review

Basically it's a war movie with four or five shots of giant monsters. The film would be exactly the same without them. And the characters are underwritten and unmemorable. Go to Full Review

nigel t Jul 29 An absolute mess of a film. Monsters that never attack people. Soldiers on a mission to shoot insurgents. That's about it waste of life watching See more Korra N Jun 30 Where Gareth Edwards' masterful indie film was thoughtful, bold & fresh, this spin-off is visually stunning yet hollow. It could've been good had Edwards at least written the film. See more Yor A Mar 22 .. yeah .. the real "monsters" were the ones with the guns, missiles and bombs .. See more pudgy p Feb 4 Loved the idea of the film just it was so all over the place with its context, the 2 end soldiers one of them just kept crying which felt like every other scene. It become far too much and started to get annoying. The monsters felt more like a background piece, nothing really goes anywhere with it them or what they do. Overall I thought the film was bad, really bad See more 11/29/2024 Really enjoyed it. Saw the first one a long time ago. Although really different from the first it, it is beautifully shot and an adventure by itself. See more J R 01/12/2024 This is Terrance Mallick's "The Thin Red Line", but with Aliens. And monsters. Like the title tells you it is. And with a poetic narration. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted, and beautifully narrated. If you want to see what human soldiers will do when dealing with semi-hostile alien life-forms that are a result of a meteor strike, this is for you. See more Read all reviews
