Though the story feels rather contrived, Moonlight Mile is redeemed by the good performances of its cast.

Audience Member In life and in love, we can expect the unexpected Jake Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon, Ellen Pompeo, and Holly Hunter directed by Brad Siberling This is loosely inspired by writer/director Brad Silberling's own experience losing someone dear to him A tragedy occurs almost breaking a family completely apart in Cape Ann, Massachusetts 1972 Joe Nast's fiancé Diana dies after being murdered so he wants to be the man everyone expects him to be Ben and Jojo are his in-laws yet they both need to work on themselves through the grieving process Joe also meets another young woman Bertie who could alter his path on who he wants to be The film is that coming-of-age tale you'd expect albeit it's a very somber viewing and it feels contrived at times You run around fast enough no one will notice what you want, if you settle for something everyone expects you're not reaching for what you grasp, painting a pretty picture we think masks the truth and the pain Gyllenhaal however is top notch here as is Pompeo, they truly feel like lost broken souls in a town that refuses to move on Loyalty and loss are big things and this film is honest about the subject of grief; its highs, lows, in-betweens and the way all of them wrap, loop and intertwine Quite an intimate look at bereavement We much like these townsfolk and director Siberling are familiar with the hardship of survivors honoring someone from whom they're best off moving on This isn't quite an uplifting film but rather a reminder that mourning shouldn't be the basis of the rest of our lives Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review Audience Member "Broken window in the cielo." Terribly touching, moving, great performances, lovely love story, bitterness, sweetness, a movie with the beauty of moonlight beams, there is a light that never goes out, a movie based on a true story, humanity, the mourn, how to rise again, and leave, and live. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member We felt the pain & complexity of losing a child in a senseless shooting. Excellent performances by Jake Gyllenhaal Dustin Hoffman Susan Sarandon Holly Hunter the entire cast. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member You would think with this cast the movie would be great but no. Hoffman seems to be in his own movie (Rainman grieves). Sarandon in another (Louise grieves). Jake in yet a third (young man with a secret grieves). Is this a slice of life drama? Because nearly everything in the movie is ugly (except Jake of course). The house they live in, ugly, the stores they visit, ugly, the bar the heroine works in, you guessed it, ugly. I guess it's a romance against the backdrop of a murder trial because why not? Unfortunately it takes so long to figure out exactly what has happened in the past that brings these three together that we have little to not time to care about them. Sometimes it's not so great to direct a movie you have also written. Here for sure that is the case. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A dramatic coming of age film with fantastic character development. One of the few films where at the end everyone wins. In addition great cinematography and music. A thinkpiece you shouldn't miss out on. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw this in the theater when I was a young film buff and was blown away by the performances. The story is a slow burn like an indie with a profound yet nuanced emotional core that is, in my opinion, moving in its authenticity. It was the first time I realized that a degree of arbitrary luck played a role in Oscar noms (again I was a kid) because I felt this deserved some recognition but was a sleeper that year. The film holds up over time. I loved it, and I still do. Oh, and the soundtrack is stellar. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Jane Howdle Empire Magazine Its original look at loyalty and loss subsides into a forgettable love story, leading it out of the darkness and straight into schmaltzville. Not about death or dying, loss or regret, but about the grieving process itself: the highs, lows, in-betweens and the way all of them wrap, loop and intertwine.
