When a meeting in Charlestown is on, he is suggested to fight for the militia against the rising power of the British who are colonizing the 13 states. When his home is invaded by wounded American soldiers, they care for them. Soon the British calvalry led by the ever-so-cruel Col. Tavington (Jason Issacs) order to kill the troops and kills Martin's second youngest son when he attacks a soldier. Overcome by grief and frustration, Martin and his young boys go after the British troops who hold the oldest captive (Heath Ledger). With skill and agility reminiscient of Hawkeye of Last of the Mohicans, Martin slaughters the troops and is called into battle against Cornwalis (Tom Wilkinson) and Tavington with his comrades (Chris Cooper, Donal Logue, and Tckheye Karyo, fight for a new country and their freedom. The film was shot on location in South Carolina, which adds to the 17th century atmosphere. There are many thrilling battle scenes, that are fairly bloody and graphic. There are also tender and touching moments of families bonding and healing and banding together to be together. No matter what the Martin family goes through, they preservere, and so do their friends. Roland Emmerich is obviously passionate in his own project, dwarfing his recent entries (Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla) with historical context and intelligent acting. Thank you, Mel Gibson!
