you're a Dolph Lundgren stan sure you've seen The Punisher & Rocky IV & Showdown In Little Tokyo but have you seen Pentathlon? if not do yourself a favor. Dolph was the Executive Producer & wanted to prove he still had it and it shows bc the whole film is footage of him being athletic & running. this man is one the great b-movie action stars & all around IRL super human. IDK if he has a star on the walk of fame but if he doesn't he needs one ASAP.

If it worked for gymnastics in "Gymkata," why not make an action film about pentathletes. Dolph Lundgren plays an East German Olympic defector who has to use his pentathlon skills (fencing, shooting, swimming, riding, and cross-country running) to escape the repressive regime and later to fight off his evil ex-coach, David Soul, who has tracked him down in America working at a greasy spoon diner owned by Roger E. Mosley. I did enjoy David Soul as the film's villain and it made wish he was in more stuff post-Starsky & Hutch, but overall this film is about what you would expect.

There is an intimate TV feel to this movie (and that's not a bad thing), which shows the escape, decline into drink and comeback of an East German refugee athlete played by Lundgren. Hot in his heels is his trainer from his youth played by Soul. Roger E. Mosley steals the show as his employer and volunteer personal trainer, but Lundgren also puts in a good performance. Some of the situations feel a little contrived, and one feels slightly shut in by whatever point the director is trying to make, rather than letting the characters truly breathe.
Nevertheless, an enjoyable and refreshingly different film for those who would rather watch a fairly well made, but original story instead of a beautifully made but totally predictable blockbuster. It definitely has its moments, and it is interesting enough to give you pause for thought afterwards.

Everyone once in a while, you end up watching a film that is so bad, you need a shower once it's over. "Pentathlon" is that movie. Arguably the biggest turd in the field of turds that is Dolph LundgrenĂ¢(TM)s career, this 1994 entry has D as Eric Broger, East Germany's greatest hope in the Olympic pentathon (running, shooting, riding, swimming, fencing). His sadistic coach/Stasi officer Meuller (David Soul) prepares Broger to win gold, but after medaling, Broger defects to the United States mere months before the Berlin Wall comes down. Broger ends up out of the sport, deep in the bottle, and working as a fry cook at a Southern style diner owned by Creese (T.C. from "Magnum PI"). Meuller has hooked up with the neo-Nazi movement and hatches a plot to assassinate the German ambassador in Los Angeles at a peace rally, but not before beating Broger's father to death. Meanwhile, Broger, with Creese's help, gets himself back in shape so he can participate in the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Broger's old flame Julia also re-enters his life. Meuller refuses to go through with his assassination until he settles scores with Broger first. Chaos, understandably, ensues. There is NOTHING good about this movie. Lundgren is cast in a part that would be ideal for a man 15 years younger (he plays Broger like a goofy teenager) , and he, in typical fashion, is terrible. He also has the second most-painful-to-watch run, after Sylvester Stallone. But David Soul's performance is so bad, you can hear his career roll over, vomit, and then die. He plays his character like William Shatner with a vague German accent. This was directed by Bruce Malmuth, who gave us the brilliant "Nighthawks" several years earlier. This movie is the antithesis of that movie - a thriller without thrills, vitality, or sense. Woodchuck sez, "Completely avoid."
