      Critics Consensus

The Bay of Silence's committed performances may be enough for thriller fans, but its twist heavy plot adds up to a muddled affair.

Jeffrey P A complex plot where the cruxes are not bad or uninteresting. It is slow to progress and does take awhile to get into, but once doing so, curiosity piques interest to maintain focus and attention. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/25/23 Full Review Late R ‘The Bay of Silence' has a number of problems. First of all, it starts out with a flashback scene that makes it too easy to guess at least part of the plot; secondly, there are two main stories that are competing with each other: how did their newly born son die and what is going with the main female character. Many twists, turns and red herrings are added along the way to keep things interesting, and whilst they do their job (it's never really boring), at the end of the day, it all seems to add up to less than the sum of its parts. It puts in all that effort to try to confuse you about what's going on and then fails to deliver a big surprise, the crescendo that you expect to arrive. Instead, it just sort of peters out. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/07/22 Full Review Audience Member This mom has a backstory that comes out after she stops taking her meds and their son mysteriously dies when she disappears with him. The movie tries to cram so many turns in, it loses its direction entirely. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Seemed odd to me that all the secondary characters in the film were so nonchalant towards the father about wanting to know how his son died . Not a bad movie though but leans towards the side of mediocrity 2.8 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/17/21 Full Review Anna c INCREDIBLE!!!! Great cast and interesting plot. A bit confusing at some points but besides that it was amazing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/21 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Cath Clarke Guardian You search for emotion in the faces of the actors: howling grief, rage, confusion, mild irritation with the preposterous plot. Nothing. Not even a twitch. Rated: 2/5 Sep 24, 2020 Full Review Odie Henderson RogerEbert.com Being jerked around by a thriller can be fun, but there are more red herrings in this movie than there are fish in the sea. They all stink. Rated: 1/4 Aug 14, 2020 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times There is less to "The Bay of Silence" than meets the eye. Aug 13, 2020 Full Review Kathy Fennessy Seattle Film Blog If [Paula van der Oest's] film isn't quite the disaster its reputation might suggest, it doesn't add up to a whole lot, despite the filmmaker's attempts to grapple with serious issues like mental illness and sexual abuse. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 15, 2022 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut The Bay of Silence has a plot and reveal so weak it would not qualify for a below-average episode of Law & Order. Rated: 1/5 Sep 2, 2022 Full Review Witney Seibold Critically Acclaimed Podcast Sleepy and miserable. A thriller without thrills. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
