Walter Goodman New York Times Lindsay Anderson's 1953 documentary runs only 21 minutes, every one of which produces a lump in the throat or a leap of the heart. Apr 4, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member This came as a bonus feature in the "If..." Criterion Collection Blu-ray. It's a 20 minute documentary short about a school for deaf children in England narrated by Richard Burton. It won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short. The film's content is very dated. The teaching methods shown are no longer in use though the school is still around, according to the intro notes. What's left is a weirdly fascinating and rather politically incorrect look into how they taught deaf children at the time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member I personally found this to be charming and extremely beautiful. This documentary was really intimate and yet knowledgeable. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A great and early documentary short from Lindsay Anderson. The film follows the children at The Royal School for the Deaf and shows us their everyday lessons. The film is almost silent apart from the music and the unmistakable voice of Richard Burton. Rather charming and heartwarming and a good slice of early Anderson. Just a note, this short, once hard to find, is avaliable as an extra on both the Criterion and Region 2 DVDs of 'If...'
