Critics Consensus

As a visually stunning tribute to lives lost in tragedy, World Trade Center succeeds unequivocally, and it is more politically muted than many of Stone's other works.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Admittedly, there are a few great shots... But, still, none of it says anything new. And it's just so sentimental. Aug 22, 2018 Full Review Stanley Kauffmann The New Republic (Director Oliver) Stone has concentrated on one of the catastrophe's stories and has fashioned it well -- with almost palpable physical detail, and with performances that never sink to exploitation. Oct 26, 2006 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald It celebrates the courage of the rescue teams and the fortitude of their families while giving you a visceral sense of what it was like to be among them. Rated: 3/5 Oct 1, 2006 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia Stone manages to give it a well-intentioned treatment that often honors the heroism of the rescuers, but its plot slowly collapses when it stretches out the episodes of familiar clichés and far-fetched sentimentality. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 6/10 Sep 11, 2024 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Stone's work is thoroughly conformist and encourages various forms of backwardness. Feb 14, 2021 Full Review Micheal Compton Bowling Green Daily News I can't recommend World Trade Center, but I will say I respect the effort. Still, I think the material deserved a better final product than the one that Stone has delivered. Nov 20, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Daniel C. M A sentimental, visually stunning and very interesting mix of a disaster movie with a docudrama tribute to the real life tragedy by Oliver Stone. While some will feel like Nicolas Cage's and Michael Pena's performances were not utilized to it's fullest, as they spend the great majority of the movie lying in the dark under rubble, i sincerely disagree. Their performances are definetely one of the best things about this movie, and probably the only actual level of emotional this movie can get to someone that was not directly affected by 9/11, which is a big factor to consider while viewing this. The movie usually gets dragged down by Michael Shannon pointless and borderline tasteless character of Marine Seargent Dave Karnes, who bring nothing to the table other than to be the one guy who coincidentally spotted Officer Jimeno amongst the rubble, even though the movie could have easily just took a random guy to fill in the spot, and we would not have to sit through his needless background story. The family drama scenes also take a while to actually get good, but even then never reach the true level of emotion the movie actually wants to have. Despite all of this, World Trade Center still remains a inspirational and visually amazing tale of hope, fuelled by Oliver Stone immersive direction. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Max W The film itself is unremarkable, with the most compelling aspect being the real story behind it. Unfortunately, such a story is inevitably constrained in adaptation, leaving most of the content between the beginning and the end unable to fully showcase the talents of Oliver Stone, Nicolas Cage, and the rest of the excellent cast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review Audience Member Gut wrenching movie - it’s a very specific movie to the involvement of a couple guys - so don’t expect it to give you the full story. It’s amazing how much more of an emotional tug a movie can be when you know the real, full story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Classical Y pretty damn cool however much of the movie is spent under the rubble with the protagonists. To be expected from a movie based on such an event but its not for everyone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review Giorgio S I excpected it to be better. Nic is ok but there are strong performances from Michael Peña and Maggie Gyllenhaal. There are two good cameos and the setpieces are awasome. The finale is one of the most satisfying I have ever seen. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/23 Full Review Cathy S I thought I was excellent..Nicholas Cage was great!
