      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Even with Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough bringing conviction to these star-crossed characters, Alice & Jack strains audience sympathy too much for love to be enough.

Deb F This is clearly not a show for everyone, based on the earlier reviews. Having said that, my husband and I both loved it. We found all the characters and their portrayals truly compelling. The writing made the show. It could have been a slog without the humor injected throughout. Can't say enough about the actors--they were great. It examines love in many various forms. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Susan J How on Earth can this have such a low rating? It's incredibly thoughtful, well-written, gorgeous cinematography. complex and honest plot line, well-developed characters over the course of years, well-constructed and put together. The chemistry is palpable. It is totally beautiful, witty, smart, original, mercifully not predictable (as 90% of everything is), heartbreaking. Amazing. I hope everyone involved with the show realizes what a fine piece of art they've made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review James K A remarkable achievement combining pretentious dialog with depressing characters. It does take you along if you care to find an answer to “what’s the point?” Final answer: None. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Kris M Modern day love story that is messy and lovely, all at the same time. I don't need it to make sense, I don't need it to be "earthy" and REAL, I want a story that keeps me guessing. This fits the bill completely. That, and it has Domhnall Gleeson. Come on. This actor can literally do no wrong. Now, I'm being introduced to Andrea Riseborough, and for me she is the female version of Domhnall. The thing I like most about this series is that I like ALL of the characters. Alice is probably the least likable, and even Alice makes sense when you know her backstory. I look forward to seeing this show every week. I'm going to be VERY sad when it ends. Honestly don't understand the nobs who don't like this movie. Honestly. You people are sad. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Ruth H Spoiler Alert: She’s a nut job. He’s a moron. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Audience Member Wholly unlikeable characters. The first two minutes of conversation at the beginning of episode one would end any desire to start a relatuonship and it goes down from there. Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Alice & Jack is a tedious romance that isn’t very romantic. Apr 26, 2024 Full Review Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe It might all make more sense if Riseborough and Gleeson had more spark between them. But their parts are under-written, anyway, so that neither character has much dimension or motivation. Mar 21, 2024 Full Review Nick Schager The Daily Beast Asks the excellent Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson to sell a variety of plot points that strain credibility to preposterous lengths. Despite a few genuinely touching moments, it’s far too daft to enchant. Mar 17, 2024 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Gleeson and Riseborough’s duo might not exactly be compatible – or combustible – but there’s a palpable chemistry and easy banter that hooks you in and makes you want to see where they’ll end up, even if together might be the worst option for both. Apr 14, 2024 Full Review Joel Keller Decider Alice & Jack sometimes feels like one of the most interesting love stories we’ve seen in ages, and at others it’s infuriatingly annoying. But Gleeson and Riseborough have undeniable chemistry... Mar 18, 2024 Full Review Alison Rowat The Herald (Scotland) They would be a tiresome pair if not for Gleeson and Riseborough’s performances. Between them they draw the audience in, making us care what happens next. Feb 27, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
