78% 23 Reviews Tomatometer 84% 50+ Ratings Audience Score Shardlake’s sheltered life as a lawyer is turned upside down when Cromwell instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea. The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery and it is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake both solves the murder and closes the monastery. He leaves Shardlake in no doubt that failure is not an option. Cromwell insists that he is accompanied by Jack Barak to Scarnsea, where the duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order. Critics Consensus

Well acted if a bit unconvincing in its verisimilitude, Shardlake's fast pace keeps it from feeling like a dry tutoring lesson on Tudors intrigue.

John Powers NPR I feared that Shardlake would serve up the Tudor era's usual cavalcade of castles, codpieces, clopping horses and quasi-Shakespearean lingo – "Prithee, stop, sirrah!" But to my surprise this odd, beautifully acted show pulled me in. May 8, 2024 Full Review Nick Hilton Independent (UK) The premise is excellent and the set-up compelling... [But] the show slips into something muddier and more generic. Stabilising the scales between history and mystery is a challenge, then, and one that Shardlake just barely balances. Rated: 3/5 May 3, 2024 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times Adapted by Stephen Butchard (“The Good Mothers”) in four relatively lean, well-packed episodes. May 3, 2024 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said Plenty of atmospheric dread, political coverups, espionage, and deceit as the unsophisticated monks try to hang on to all they’ve known so that Henry VIII can end Catholic domination of England, and divorce his wife to marry another woman. Rated: 3/4 May 10, 2024 Full Review James Delingpole The Spectator One of the things that make the Shardlake books so distinctive and admirable is their attention to period detail... The problem -- and it’s a big one -- is that this adaptation comprises almost nothing but anachronisms. jane b Really well acted, moving and exciting. It was gripping and atmospheric. I would love to see a second series. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Peter Q Gripping atmospheric historical drama, great cast Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Tina S Being an avid SJ Sansom fan I was very nervous of watching this. Although the casting was not what I was expecting, the cast, especially the two leads, Mathew and Jack worked out fine. We all have our own preconceptions of who would play our favourite literary characters but they fitted the story well. A few changes to the novel but overall it was a good dramatisation. Arthur Hughes was great as Shardlake, and I'm hoping that Hulu will continue with the other stories. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/09/24 Full Review Daniel A Arthur Hughes embodies Shardlake with such remarkable nuance, it's as if he stepped straight out of the pages of the novels. His portrayal is intelligent, compassionate, and utterly captivating. Every scene with Hughes is a masterclass in understated brilliance. He commands the screen with a magnetism that charms, intrigues, and draws plenty of belly-laughs. Shardlake boasts a fantastic script, a richly evocative atmosphere, and a stellar supporting cast, including actor-du-jour Anthony Boyle as Shardlake's sidekick, and the ever-reliable Sean Bean as Thomas Cromwell. But it is Arthur Hughes' performance that lingers long after the credits roll. He is, without a doubt, a star in the making. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/24 Full Review Nikki W I love this adaptation of the Shardlake Series by CJ Sansom. the atmosphere of menace in Tudor England was beautifully evoked, Shardlake and Barrack were well cast and their relationship was nuanced and convincing. An intriguing historical thriller. Looking forward to the second series 🙂 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review Lucy G This is a superb adaptation of the book. There are a lot more books so I look forward to seeing Shardlake and Barak back in action soon Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
