The Sympathizer does a solidly satisfying job of adapting its ambitious source material, conveying its core themes even as it occasionally struggles with its structure.

Robert J Well done. Sufficiently engaging. Conflicts and problems of the characters have the potential to be repetitive and predictable. So far, there are not any more sympathetic characters which I would generate my caring or concern and extended interest... We will have to see. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/26/24 Full Review Louis L Histoire intéressante Acteurs moyens voir mauvais Effets spéciaux moyens Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/24 Full Review Haydn C I'm loving this series! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review M. C If you're pulling Robert Downey Jr. from the big screen, you need to offer a role that's more captivating than this one. The trailer promised excitement, but the first episode falls short. Many have labeled the show as dull, and I tend to agree. The characters lack depth, making it hard to invest in any tension. Successful TV writing, like "Better Call Saul," keeps viewers engaged by constantly rewarding them. Simply relying on a big budget and fancy camerawork isn't enough. Even lengthy, subtitled shows like "Shogun" manage to keep the plot moving and develop characters with each interaction. "Sympathiser," however, fails to make use of its intriguing time period, opting instead for flashy presentation without substance. Viewers aren't given characters worth investing in. It has only been one episode and many shows improve with more time. I believe that great tv shows don’t need 3 episodes to capture audience Interest and this show really needed a better script. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Tanya P It's always hard to adapt great books into series or movies, especially this masterpiece of a book, but the show did a fantastic job, and based on my dad's description, it accurately portrayed the last day(s) before Saigon fell. And it's satisfying -- and I felt proud -- to see Vietnamese actors portraying complex Vietnamese characters on a major platform like HBO. Looking forward to the rest of the series. I thought it was well-acted and adapted well for the screen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Mitchell P It really captures the dark sense of humor of the book. Can't wait for the rest of the series! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) The Sympathizer is a heady, at times discombobulating but almost always compulsive series about the complexity of loyalty, belonging and betrayal. Apr 26, 2024 Full Review Maxwell Rabb Chicago Reader The show falls to pieces because, by the end, it juggles too many issues without enough time to wrap it up, failing to fully explore the protagonist's internal conflict. We end the series looking for one more revision, one more "Rewrite." Apr 20, 2024 Full Review Inkoo Kang New Yorker Park and his co-creator, Don McKellar, never quite get these disparate elements to gel... Apr 16, 2024 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan Like The Captain, the limited series is also having an identity crisis. But Park and McKellar do an incredible job showing the changing perspective of the Vietnam War in Hollywood and the United States. Apr 28, 2024 Full Review Joly Herman Common Sense Media The Sympathizer is not for young teens or kids. It's best enjoyed by families who like spy dramas, and those who dig war-time action -- this show is doused in it. Apr 24, 2024 Full Review Joel Keller Decider The Sympathizer tells a story about the post-Vietnam War experience that we haven’t heard much of here in the U.S., but we hope it doesn’t get bogged down by some of the gimmicks we already see in the first episode.
