The suave, confident and devastatingly handsome Sterling Archer may be the world's greatest spy, but he still has issues with his friends and colleagues who live to undermine and betray one another. Whether set in 1940s Los Angeles, the jungles of South America or the dangerous islands of the South Pacific, "Archer" is an animated comedy that spans time and place to navigate Sterling, Lana, Cheryl/Carol/Charlotte, Cyril, Pam, Ray and Krieger's misguided misadventures that range from attempting to save the world from nuclear disaster to selling illegal narcotics to Colombian cartels.

Though long-time fans may be frustrated by this slim diversion from Archer's main narrative, Danger Island gleefully colors outside the lines of 1930s serial tropes while incorporating many of the series' treasured jokes into a self-contained story.

Nothing signifies the weird swerve Adam Reed and company are doing with this season of Archer better than Crackers The Macaw, the latest addition to the show's cast of consistently dysfunctional characters.

Danger Island is a follow-up spring break in Miami. There's still pleasures to be had, but it's all a bit hollow...undercutting of all prior narrative stakes is very Archer, but it's also a little disappointing for those looking for any resolution.

In a way this sort of satire makes sense, because this was always meant to poke fun at all those spy movies, a good many of them taking place in exotic locales. But fans are still left waiting for their hero to wake up.

While this season has its enjoyable bits, mainly the exotic local, Poovey and Archer interactions, and a coked up Cyril, along with some beautiful animation, overall, it feels hollow. The characters are not themselves, and the dialogue not nearly as snappy. I found myself wondering if they'd changed some key writers. Luckily, this season is short, and the following season seems to be improving. Watch this season as a colorful Archer spin-off, or skip the season, and you won't miss much.

I don't know why this season gets such a lower rating than the others. I actually think it's better than the previous season (season 8 - dreamland). Well done, funny, inventive, etc. Just like all the others before it. Great show all around.

[⭐️66%] Archer's ninth season of television and second to take place in an imaginary dream world, fails to use its fresh environment to its advantage, dragging out long expositional scenes, which makes the season feel short on ideas despite it containing fewer episodes than other seasons. Danger Island (the alternative title for this season) knows where it wants to start and end, but doesn't know how to feel the middle section, providing a season with far too little action and perhaps failing to develop its large catalogue of characters.

While not excatly bad, this season does not come even close to the show's prime moments. On yet another alternative setting, which leaves the feeling that the authors are still figuring what to do after the cliffhanger left on season 7 finale. It's an ok season at best.
