As mayor, Tom Kane is the most powerful man in Chicago, where the constituents have a history of looking the other way as long as the job gets done. And Kane has gotten things done over several terms in office; he knows the backroom politics game in the Windy City and he plays it well. Yet despite his success, Kane leads an otherwise empty existence. He has no one to turn to when he's confronted with the fact that he has a degenerative brain disorder. He's estranged from his wife, Meredith, and daughter, Emma. Kitty O'Neil, Kane's chief of staff, has her suspicions but plays the part of loyal employee, as does adviser Ezra Stone, who doesn't ask any questions. That's the way Kane likes it, of course, but he won't be able to keep his secret forever.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Kelsey Grammar alone provides ample reason to watch Boss, but the rest of the stellar supporting cast of wretchedly fascinating, emotionally entangled characters holds viewer attention.

Brian Tallerico HollywoodChicago.com The good news is that the focus is here in the second season, one that feels even more like Shakespearian drama but that justifies its self-seriousness more than in season one with fascinating characters. Rated: 4/5 Feb 8, 2019 Full Review Andrew Collins Guardian Boss stands as testament both to the declamatory acting heft of Grammer, whose square head, booming expletives and rolled shirtsleeves bespeak a very male brand of executive power, and to the purchasing acumen of Channel 4. Feb 8, 2019 Full Review David Hinckley New York Daily News At the heart of this drama, in every sense, is Grammer. It's worth turning on this show just to watch his performance. Rated: 4/5 Aug 17, 2012 Full Review Kevin Yeoman Screen Rant Season 2 of Boss started off with a great deal of promise... In the end, the finale left the season with a sense of lackadaisical repetition, a shuffling of the pieces, instead of decisively pushing them forward. Feb 8, 2019 Full Review Sarah Boslaugh PopMatters ...t a hardboiled, somewhat abstracted view of power relations as practiced by a varied cast of characters... while also imparting an almost Shakespearean grandeur to the proceedings. Rated: 8/10 Aug 29, 2014 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette I'm still hooked on Boss; watching Kane and his political machine proved too mesmerizing to resist. K e Great show. Not sure how it wasn’t more popular. I assume it’s because it aired on Starz? Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews
