What to Know

Critics Consensus

Children of Dune may not settle the debate over whether Frank Herbert's landmark opus can truly translate onto the screen, but strong production values and committed performances give this adaptation some spice.

Phelim O'Neill and Paul Howlett Guardian It spins out quite a complicated tale of political and religious intrigue, not quite as battle-heavy as its predecessor, but looks exotic and has a sense of scale missing from most space operas. May 21, 2020 Full Review Allan Johnson Chicago Tribune The special effects are eye-popping, especially the digitally created sand worms and cities. But Children of Dune's slow pacing and generally monotonous story show that looking good isn't better than being good. May 21, 2020 Full Review Hal Boedeker Orlando Sentinel The ambitious miniseries will bowl over viewers with its dynamic effects, sets, photography, costumes and Matrix-style action. Yet the themes of revenge and fanaticism are often muddled as the actors garble the portentous dialogue. May 20, 2020 Full Review Alan Ng Film Threat Much of the action and intrigue comes from the dialogue, but on the bright side, there's more hand-to-hand fighting than the first. Rated: 7.5/10 Oct 27, 2021 Full Review M.S. Mason Christian Science Monitor As hard to follow as it is, this epic will haunt Dune fans long after it leaves the air. May 21, 2020 Full Review Terry Kelleher People Magazine Children of Dune is like Shakespeare, Greek tragedy and a biblical epic rolled into one and set 8,000-plus years in the future. It's every bit as unwieldy as it sounds, but there are compensations. May 20, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Dan K Along with the Dune mini-series from 2000 that Sci-fi channel put out, this is still the most faithful treatment of Frank Herbert’s novels to date. Given that book 4 took place over thousands of years, it’s not too late for James McAvoy to reprise the role of Leto II, God Emperor of Dune. He ts a shame that this version isn’t available to stream. It s available on dvd and bluray though. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review Draec M A sequel to the low-budget series from 2000. Still surprisingly faithful to the books ("Mesiah..." and "Children...). Cheap but good to watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review C S Was good. Some very good performances.
