Audience Member There comes a time even the most beloved television series receives them dreaded memo that works programming executive; series is canceled. Fairly often the show just ends universal carefully constructed over the years it ran blinking out of existence. The post series fate of the characters that we have grown so used to would remain unknown, subject endless fan debate and speculation. Back in 1967 the most popular series of the time, ‘The Fugitive’, ended its four year run definitive and satisfying conclusion. There has been an increasing amount of fan pressure for the networks to provide a grand dénouement for series they have faithfully followed for a number of years. Recently CBS was faced with this dilemma but after 15 seasons they canceled ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’. 15 years is a respectable run for any television series and very few make it that far. Even more importantly is this show became the flagship for series that had branched off into several cities as primary location and still exists thanks to its latest incarnation, ‘CSI: Cyber’. For this series to end without some special episode to tie up some loose ends and transition characters to their future endeavors, would be an insult to the many fans and thankfully CBS decided to have a special two-hour conclusion that would reunite some of the founding members of the cast. The episodes are naturally included in the complete 15th season DVD set but CBS/Paramount decided to make it available as a standalone release, ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation-The Finale’. Even if you are a fan who drifted array somewhere along the 15 year duration’s final episodes may be of considerable interest to you. Not wanting to provide a spoiler it can be said that thread that has existed since the very first season is finally tied up in a raid that role please the vast majority of diehard fans. There are a few things to keep in mind when considering a series finale. The exact detail of the last crime to be investigated is a form of MacGuffin, greatly important to the characters within the context story but secondary to the audience and their appreciation of the episode. A suicide bomber detonates his explosive vest in the middle of the gambling for of the Eclipse casino. The casino is owned by former Las Vegas CSI supervisor, Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger). Some time ago Catherine left a long-standing position in Las Vegas and joined the FBI as a Supervisory Special Agent. After the explosion she returns to Las Vegas to serve as the agent in charge of the investigation. Former supervisor of the CSI Las Vegas night shift, Gil Grissom (William Petersen) has been focusing his sharp, analytical mind to the preservation of sharks international borders and has just run afoul of the war in San Diego resulting in his arrest and incarceration. His ex, Sarah Seidel (Jorja Fox), is asked by supervisor, D.B. Russell (Ted Danson), to be in charge of the bombing investigation. She is anxious for the opportunity she is currently hopeful to receive the promotion to Director of the Las Vegas Crime Lab. When the preliminary investigation indicates that the former elite dominatrix, Lady Heather Kessler (Melinda Clarke), is involved. She is now a licensed psychologist whose practice focuses on sexual dysfunction. Besides Sarah she’s the only woman that Grissom has ever shown any real affinity towards. Las Vegas Sheriff Conrad Ecklie (Marc Vann) has always had a strained relationship with Grissom but he put that aside realizing that he would be the best one to get information from Lady Heather. He reaches out to the San Diego authorities and has Grissom released and returned to Las Vegas. Rounding out the members of the old gang being reunited is Jim Brass (Paul Guilfoyle) was for many years to captain in the homicide division closely associated with the CSI staff. He is currently working at the Eclipse Casino is the head of security. It appears that in the vast majority of the series finale reunions the circumstances to bring everyone back together on highly contrived. Some of the circumstances utilized here do come across as forced the overall effect is consistent with the strong narrative serves as a fond farewell to every character brought back. I’m quite certain that the writers spent many long hours debating the proper circumstances to bring back characters not been seen, or even mentioned, and a number of years. By utilizing a location for the crime that is owned by one former member and a material witness closely associated with another the flow of the story does make it rather easy for fans to just accept the circumstances as naturally occurring. But the focus understandably centered on the alumni of the series the current cast was naturally relegated to background roles. The current shift supervisor D.B. Russell is preparing to leave Las Vegas in search of new opportunities back east. That is actually a very subtle way of transitioning to his new role as a civilian consultant for the FBI’s cyber-crimes division in CSI: Cyber. Previously there were some doubt as to whether or not persistent night shift supervisor, Julie Finlay (Elisabeth Shue). A debt was made official D. B. Is seen packing a plaque reading; "In remembrance of Julie Finlay; "End of watch, February 15, 2015". Is only proper that the main cast of these final seasons step back for this final double episode, after all the relationships in interpersonal dynamics between Grissom Sarah and Catherine were the foundation not only for this series but would set the template forward several spinoffs. The CSI franchise leaves a legacy that goes far beyond its own set of series. It marked the official beginning of the forensic science trend that has been dominating television almost two decades. One touch I found particularly endearing role placed was the appearance of Lindsey Willows (Katie Stevens is the daughter of CSI Catherine Willows. The role has been held by various actresses over the years necessitated by the character growing up the child beginning already a young adult in this episode. Many fans want to know what happens to the characters and institutions have grown so fond of over the years. For Lindsey Willows character has grown from the child the mother has to get back to despite the intensity of the case through troubled teen years with the requisite episodes concerning the dangers of a good kid from a loving home can be sprayed by bad influences. Finally with satisfying promises of unseen future Lindsey is a CSI trainee and her mother resigns from the FBI to work with her in Las Vegas. The big question of Sarah and Grissom is handled with panache and is sure to be satisfying for anyone who is ever been a fan of the series. And all this is one of the best series finales I have seen in a very long while. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
