Behind the facade of a postcard-perfect subdivision live four women whose lives are anything but idyllic. Klutzy Susan is divorced and the mother of teenage Julie. Lynette is married to Tom and the frazzled mother of four rambunctious children. Bree is the neighborhood's Martha Stewart, whose perfection masks major dysfunction. Ex-model Gabrielle, married to handsome and successful Carlos, wants to have her cake and eat it too. Looking down on it all is Mary Alice, who took her own life but comments on the lives of her former neighbors.

Critics Consensus

Desperate Housewives' first season offers a refreshingly self-aware approach to the soap opera genre, making the most of its suburban setting with sardonic writing and seductive mysteries.

Belinda Acosta Austin Chronicle Borrowing from Twin Peaks, with a nod to Leave It to Beaver on acid, Desperate Housewives is one of the most original dramedies to premiere this fall. Jan 17, 2020 Full Review Tom Shales Washington Post In visual style, witty language, borderline surrealism and overall mad attitude, Desperate Housewives stands on a mountaintop all its own, the best new drama of the season and perhaps the best new comedy, too. Jan 14, 2020 Full Review Andrea Peyser New York Post This show does not pretend to resolve any great, cultural questions. It works, quite simply, because it's fun. Jan 14, 2020 Full Review Jerry Graham Santa Cruz Sentinel Desperate Housewives appears to have found a formula that appeals to a variety of tastes. You can watch it as satire or as a serial drama that keeps you wondering what will happen next. Jun 29, 2023 Full Review M.S. Mason Christian Science Monitor Sharp writing, terrific performances by Felicity Huffman and Teri Hatcher, and a darkly comic take on suburbia make this a riveting dramedy series for mature audiences. Jan 17, 2020 Full Review Wm. Steven Humphrey The Stranger (Seattle, WA) Desperate Housewives is occasionally funny -- but not half as clever as it thinks. Jan 17, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Noam S A perfect combination of drama and comedy. The show is both mysterious, thrilling and so funny. Perfect for binge. And be warned, once you start watching it you won't be able to stop. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Test T I watched this on DVD recently, looping back to it after watching seasons 5 - 8 in sequence. By comparison, season 1 was superior to all of the other seasons I have watched. It's got everything which some of the other seasons had without the time wasting filler episodes. Season 1 hits the ground running at pace with a great plot incorporating drama, mystery and commedy elements which got me hooked immediately. This is a very well made high quality show which really stands out. The writing is excellent, and the character development and acting is first rate. I really can't find anything to complain about. Even the background soundtrack which I thought was overdone in the later seasons is tastefully integrated in season one. The whole thing is just extremely good and I have no reservations in recommending it. One other thing to note is that the story is addictive even when you watch the seasons out of order like I did, which I found surprisingly clever. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/29/25 Full Review Rain R Ingeniously written and definitely bingeworthy the story lines sometimes touch on deeply complex and delicate issues with respectful humour and often profound insights. Some of the storyline threads are shallow and superficial and some lead nowhere - which is frustrating at times. The main actors are all excellent but some of the short-term actors give a less than compelling performance. Provides a nice, highly watchable, tongue-in-cheek escape from daily life, but much too heavy on the sex scenes present in overdrive in every episode and often unnecessary to the story lines giving a trash feeling to the show on many occasions in my opinion. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely the best entrance to any show! Also the best season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review ERIKA G BEST TV SOAP OPERA EVER!!! WONDERFUL ACTING, DIRECTING, WRITING AND SCENOGRAPHY!!! KUDOS TO THE PRODUCTION!!! Bref parfait !! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
