Dexter Morgan is a Miami-based blood splatter expert who doesn't just solve murders; he commits them too. In fact, he's a serial killer -- but he only murders the guilty, so he feels justified with his lifestyle choices. His policewoman sister and his cop co-workers have no idea Dexter lives a double life; however, adoptive father Harry knows his secret, and does, in fact, help Dexter hone his "skills." It's a unique brand of justice for which charming Dexter feels a psychological hunger.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its dark but novel premise may be too grotesque for some, but Dexter is a compelling, elegantly crafted horror-drama.

Geordie Gray The Australian It looks amazing, the vivid colour grading and am-dram severed limbs are such a welcome reprieve from the serious grey sludge of modern prestige television. Mar 29, 2024 Full Review Hannah Pool Guardian Dexter isn't just clever and original, it's also incredibly funny, which is quite an achievement given its gruesome subject matter. Apr 3, 2020 Full Review Jim Shelley Guardian Everything is so heavily stylised, the emphasis is on irony rather than realism... Well it made me laugh. Jan 8, 2019 Full Review Joel Keller Decider Dexter is about a killer, which means there’s a lot of blood and body parts. But it’s also a story that hadn’t really been told on TV at the time, and Michael C. Hall puts in a dynamic performance as the killer with something resembling a conscience. Jun 20, 2024 Full Review Jason Zingale Bullz-Eye.com This is smart TV for a very select group of people, and though it's not nearly as refined as Showtime's other big gun ("Weeds"), it does have the potential to become the blossoming network's flagship program. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 3, 2020 Full Review Matt Paproth PopMatters Unlike many series, Dexter began pretty much fully-formed, with a clear sense of what a season feels like and of how it would approach characterization (cartoonish) and narrative (TENSE). Mike P Dexter: A sympathetic serial killer. A handsome, middle-aged Miami forensics expert; with a very dark secret... Let's just say he loves to take his work home with him...So ..Is he the good guy? Or the bad guy? Maybe a little of both? Dexter's the judge, jury and executioner we all wish we could be...From time to time anyway...And yet, when we all see it laid out like this; so plain and obvious; and ugly; it makes us wonder...Is vigilantism, even this kind of obvious black and white vigilantism, is this the answer to all society's ills? The show's absolute unwillingness to answer this question is what makes it so compelling. And Michael Hall is indeed quite the compelling cypher... He's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. And so is life ..As a matter of fact. Particularly for serial killers... (P.S. speaking of all of that..."Dexter" comes from the latin meaning right or good. It's the opposite of "Sinister" meaning bad. Ironic, no?)... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Audience Member The plot is very lackluster in the first season of Dexter, but it keeps you hooked through the interesting premise and thrill of watching Dexter manage multiple lives all at once. In the story department, the main antagonist, the Ice Truck Killer ending up to be the person who it was, was a very cliche twist. You're trying to guess who the Ice Truck Killer could be throughout the episodes, just to be met with the disappointment that you never had a possibility of being right about who it really was, because it was a character that wasn't even introduced until the later episodes of the season. Overall, very disappointing ending to the first season of Dexter, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review Jack R This season is incredible and the Ice truck Killer mystery is Great and Dexters personal relationships really shine and The pacing and Look of the show is Top notch and The characters are really well acted and I think the one thing that lets this season down is the reveal of the killer, I don’t know if it was just me but after getting to see and know Rudy I always knew something was up but overall highly recommend Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review Audience Member Season 1 is top 3 of the seasons. Season 1 of Dexter is the best starter to a show, with lifely colors and moods this show is amazing. With a sad ending to it as well and a insane plot twist and increasing lore later into the season. This season had meaning to the ending and in the best way possible. I extremely love this season as it was the best and is top 3 in my opinion for SURE. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Theo K Season 1 is great. Very comforting and weirdly homely season. Dexter peaks at the beginning Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/25 Full Review Simon T Although I'm late to this show, watching it for the first time, I highly recommend it to everyone. It's addicting; it always makes you want to continue watching. The storyline is perfect, and each character is well-written. I love the character development of Dexter Morgan. We get a lot of background flashbacks of Dexter as a child. We see more into his thoughts and feelings. We also see that he is not truly an evil person. The mystery behind the Ice Truck Killer was shocking. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
