Dexter Morgan is a Miami-based blood splatter expert who doesn't just solve murders; he commits them too. In fact, he's a serial killer -- but he only murders the guilty, so he feels justified with his lifestyle choices. His policewoman sister and his cop co-workers have no idea Dexter lives a double life; however, adoptive father Harry knows his secret, and does, in fact, help Dexter hone his "skills." It's a unique brand of justice for which charming Dexter feels a psychological hunger.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The darkly dreaming Dexter lays to rest once and for all in a bitterly disappointing final season that is so hesitant to punish its anti-hero for his misdeeds, it opts to punish its audience instead.

Simon Horsford Daily Telegraph (UK) Hall's character will definitely be missed as will the ritualistic opening credits - it's just a shame the ending was uncharacteristically tame. Rated: 3/5 Apr 3, 2020 Full Review Stuart Heritage Guardian At this point, the only people still watching are life-hating masochists like me who grimly cling on to each new arid, inert, incident-free episode just because they've already sat through seven and a half godforsaken years of this tripe. Jan 9, 2019 Full Review Chuck Barney San Jose Mercury News [A finale], which, in some ways, felt like a cop-out, closed the book on the groundbreaking series and on a final season that won't likely be remembered as one of its best. Jan 9, 2019 Full Review Greg MacArthur Screen Rant The Dexter original series had the potential to be an all-time great series but fumbled in its latter half, which arguably should not have been made. Rated: 8/10 Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Ben Lee Digital Spy This season has been appalling by the show's once-lofty standards set several seasons ago. Given the writers had time to plan its end, it was a pity that the stakes weren't more significantly raised. Apr 3, 2020 Full Review Anthony Ocasio Screen Rant No matter how much character progression and evolution the season introduced, it was as if the finale threw it all away for a twist ending that is not only wholly unoriginal, but was also awkward in execution. Audience Member I'm sorry, what the HELL was that?! This season was so good, and then it reached the last episode; a.k.a. the FINAL episode of the SERIES entirely. The last episode was so lame, unconclusive, and overall garbage, and made the entire season go down from 4 stars to 1.5 stars. Everyone we actually like in the ENTIRE SERIES seems to die, only leaving characters who barely mattered after their starring season alive. You can pull off a tragic ending without it being terrible- and this is not an example of that. This season also stars various sub-plots and many side characters that were not important at all, and it almost seems like everyone completely forgot that LaGuerta even existed and they didn't look far into her murder at all, automatically assuming that Estrada killed her. Why was Masuka's daughter even introduced? NOTHING important happened with her. Hannah McKay should've stayed gone. Because she stayed, we had two new characters who had no purpose to exist other than hunting her. One of them died instantly to Oliver Saxon, and the others' fate wasn't even stated after Hannah gave him a dose of horse tranquilizer. I feel like it would've been awesome if special agent Lundy wasn't killed halfway through the series, because it would've been cooler and seemed more threatening if HE was the one searching for Hannah McKay, rather than whoever these nobodies are. But of course, this show kills off everyone that we grow to love, from Doakes', to LaGuerta, to Lundy, to Miguel, to Debra, to Rita. Another bonus: making Lumen, a love interest for Dexter that I thought was much better, completely disappear. Overall, I should've dropped this show after season 3, and I feel like I've wasted hours of my life watching this show with an absolutely horrid ending. The earlier seasons completely carry it, and the later seasons just can't seem to hit the same mark. 8/10 show overall, purely just because of how GREAT season 2 was. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review chocolate c i had the displeasure of watching this total debacle months ago and, oh lord, the rants i can go on. after making the unfortunate decision to not end hannah mckay's laughable, sorry i meant compelling, arc in season seven's finale, they forced hannah's subplot down our throats for the remainder of the series, much like they did dr vogel's. there's no hiding that hannah was only introduced during season seven to replace debra as dexter's love interest, after inevitably offended audiences ensured the death of debster. i'm honestly wondering if debra would've been the better choice at this point because nobody is buying that hannah, in her endless (homicidical) grace, was capable of single-handidly ridding dexter of his bloodlust. too many subplots were taking the focus away from where it should have been: on dexter and deb, and on dexter and deb alone. dexter's eighth season would have, ideally, centered around the brother-sister duo as MMPD tailed their every move, in the wake of laugerta's murder. the lead up to this crap was non-existant. nothing the writers did eased us into deb's last days, and her ultimate, tragic end. instead of a beautiful, tasteful tribute to who the fan-favourite, beloved debra was, 8x12 translated as a cruel joke at her expense. the pacing of this, and espc its final episode, was all over the place. it's almost unbelievable that the following events disgraced our screens in *one* episode; deb being taken into an ambulance after saxon shot her and left her for dead, to being in surgery, to being stable, then unstable, then becoming brain dead, to finally mercy killed by dexter. in my humble opinion, and many more, this justified a two-episode stretch to fully embrace the torturous, harrowing process that was dexter losing his best (and only) friend. but too much to ask from the same executives who have bastardised everything canonically after season eight's end in an almost fascinating return to form; rushing major plots, whilst dragging through useless arcs, to butchering characters one-by-one. even jennifer carpenter, who requested deb to be killed off, didn't like it. if "sins of the father" didn't exist (and let me tell you, i wish it didn't), 8x12 would be the worst tv series finale ever. the death, funeral, and goodbye to "dexter" was "remember the monsters?". this episode is a sad state of affairs. depressing, poorly-paced, utterly rock-bottom. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review Audience Member My opinion of Dexter as a WHOLE. Dexter as a whole is a great show. With great character development and dyamic this show is amazing. The show is the best I have seen. Even with season 8 its still amazing. The way that the seasons deepen to more of a different view to is astonishing. People say that the best of the best of Dexter is through seasons 1-4. Don't get me wrong the season were the best of the best but so were 5-8. You need a better understanding to realize why the rest of the seasons were built like that. Since in seasons 1-4 Dexter is living a somewhat good life for him. Until the love of his life Rita dies Dexter falls into a deep depression and wants to find more love from other people hence why he raged when Lumen said she will be going home, and why he fell in love with Hannah. He wanted love after Rita got killed. Dexter never felt real love until he met Rita. So when she was killed he fell into a deppressive state wanting love. The seasons of this show were amazing. Don't get me wrong some of them were not that great, S3, S5, but they were still enjoyable in my opinion. It also feels like that every death in the show has somewhat of a meaning to it which makes it amazing. This show is great and addicting its not very action filled but still has some action built into it. The ending of the show was good if you understood it. You have to understand WHY Dexter killed Debra when she still could've been saved. The reason why Dexter dumped Debra in the ocean is because in S1 Debra and Dexter have a talk about killing them if one of them have gotten brain dead. In S8 in the hospital the doctor said there is a chance of her living but the cost was she would be brain dead. This is why Dexter killed Debra. To fulfill her wish or request if she'd become brain dead. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Sarah M One of my all time favorite shows! And love the spin offs as well. This show I HIGHLY recommend. Some many plot twists and secrets! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review William S It feels like the ending was forced into happening, the final chapter of a book ending halfway through. I’m not satisfied. Realistically, everyone who made it this far may as well watch it Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Annette B Not my favourite season and certainly not my favourite ending to a series. That said, it was time… and Dexter has been losing his way for a while and his parenting skills have been getting worse since season 6. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
