Lindsay Press Culturess The two leading female characters are the backbone of season two. However, Doogie Kamealoha M.D. always remembers the fun of family hijinks. Apr 5, 2023 Full Review Johnny Loftus Decider Doogie Kamealoha, MD features a charming cast with an easy chemistry, lots of sun and surfing visuals, and a contemporary take on teen life – even while its main character strives to balance that with her burgeoning career as Oahu’s youngest physician. BRizz 2 Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. (Disney+) is a charming and heartfelt reimagining of the original Doogie Howser, M.D., set in modern-day Hawai‘i and led by a talented young cast. With two seasons under its belt, the series does a fantastic job of introducing us to Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha, a teenage medical prodigy balancing the challenges of being a doctor with the chaos of high school, friendships, and family life. Season 1 lays the groundwork beautifully, drawing viewers into Lahela’s double life and also giving plenty of attention to the people around her. Her parents, especially her supportive and often humorous father and her strict but caring mother (who’s also her boss at the hospital), are pivotal to the story. Her younger brother brings levity and fun, while her best friend and boyfriend round out an ensemble that feels vibrant, grounded, and relatable. Peyton Elizabeth Lee shines in the lead role, delivering a performance that is full of charm, intelligence, and emotional depth. The chemistry between the cast members—especially within the Kamealoha family—is a major strength of the show. It’s honestly a shame that Disney canceled the series. There was so much potential here to expand the universe with more guest stars, deeper medical cases, and even a cameo from Neil Patrick Harris as the original Doogie Howser. It had all the ingredients to become a long-running favorite. This show has a special magic to it—fun, heartwarming, and full of that nostalgic Disney Channel feel, while also incorporating modern issues and cultural representation. It’s not meant to be a gritty medical drama. If you’re looking for something lighthearted, bingeable, and filled with aloha spirit, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. delivers. That said, it’s not perfect. Some viewers may have wanted more hospital drama or a more serious tone like the original Doogie Howser, M.D.. Instead, this version leans more into teen drama and family dynamics, which may have been part of the reason for its cancellation. At times, the show focused a little too heavily on Lahela’s personal relationships—particularly her parents’ marriage and her romantic life—rather than her work as a young doctor. That balance could have been improved. Still, this show deserved more time to grow. It had the heart, the cast, and the creativity. It’s definitely worth watching if you’re craving something with that classic Disney energy, great family storytelling, and a fresh, cultural twist. Disney missed out on making this their next big series—and I hope one day they reconsider bringing it back. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review Christina P This show is a sequel to Doogie Howser, M.D. and acknowledges the original teenage-doctor dramedy while carving out its own distinctive, Hawaiian-flavored personality around a wonderful cast. The show amazing. We loved watching it as a family. The show deals with family, friendships, death, and growing up. We loved being able to discuss the episodes with the kids and this series is a must watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/24 Full Review P D I binged both seasons and loved it! I loved the family chemistry and Dr. Lee and Kai were my favorite. The show made me nostalgic and I enjoyed every second of it. It's cheesy, family-friendly fun and I really hope Disney comes out with a season 3.
