What to Know

Critics Consensus

Startlingly disturbing despite its outwardly fuzzy appearance, Eric is a perverse genre-bender that may not fully articulate all of its ideas but offers a memorably demented binge.

Jun 14, 2024 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) The soundtrack alone... it's a real celluloid jukebox soundtrack. Jun 5, 2024 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine It’s only the quirkier half of Eric, an unfocused, inconsistently written, and wonderfully acted show whose ambition is admirable and originality rare in an increasingly formulaic crime genre. Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Romey Norton Film Focus Online Overall, Eric is a seriously entertaining series, with twists, turns and torment. One of Benedict Cumberbatch’s more interesting performances - it’s not one to miss. Torin F ERIC is a uniquely challenging limited series, driven by a central character (B. Cumberbatch) who is so thoroughly abrasive and unlikeable as to be almost unwatchable. However, the portrayal, artistry, overall acting, heavy psychological story and darkly amplified 80's NYC do ultimately create a compelling character study that manages to accomplish some of the series' serious ambitions. Grim but effective, if a little overwrought. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Ollie U A very confused drama. At times it felt like the writers were making it up as they went along, episode by episode. It felt too long and didn’t make sense. Character’s actions were very implausible. The subplots were predictable. BC’s American accent was terrible and it felt like he overacted the part. None of the characters were likeable and therefore I felt I didn’t care what the whole outcome was. It felt like no one won. All in all - very disappointing Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Jane E Very fine performances. Lot of scenes of things most of us turn away from if we can. So much ugly on view. The grace of the detective character in all his relationships was worth the time. Not familiar with the actor McKinley Belcher, I really appreciated his performance. Treatment of the other missing boy's story was excellent. Kudos to the writer and production team. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Lau J Gran historia que te hace ponerte en los zapatos de los personajes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Mark d Fantastic sceneries of New York during the 1980's. An anthology film, with different stories, and the struggle for life. Must see! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Jera B Beautiful show about fatherhood, addiction, mental illness, and generational trauma. Hard to watch at times, but so well done. Benedict Cumberbatch and Gabby Hoffman are flawless. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
