What to Know

Critics Consensus

Foundation's big-budget production and impressive performances are a sight to behold, but it struggles to wrangle the behemoth that is its source material into a fully satisfying series.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald As with all good sci-fi, Foundation gives you plenty to chew on -- and the chewing has only just begun. Rated: 4/5 Oct 7, 2021 Full Review Scott Bryan BBC.com It would be enjoyable if they had a bit more fun with it, but watching it felt like I was in a meeting. Oct 6, 2021 Full Review Chancellor Agard Entertainment Weekly By keeping the audience at arm's length, Foundation also makes it that much harder to connect with any of the characters, despite some solid performances from the entire cast. Rated: C+ Oct 4, 2021 Full Review Alachia Queen Alachia Queen This series is what all science fiction shows should use as their standard. The scope of the story telling, the production value, and character performances are all outstanding. Rated: A Aug 6, 2023 Full Review Aaron Phillips But Why Tho? A Geek Community Foundation season 1 is a highly compelling piece of sci-fi that has some magnificent visual effects. Lee Pace, and Jared Harris light up the show with their commanding character portrayals. Rated: 8/10 Jan 23, 2023 Full Review Cris Kennedy The Canberra Times (Australia) Some of the worlds we visit are pulled right from the pages of Tekhnika Molodezhi... But this world building does produce long ponderous scenes, and pace can be an issue at times in the screenplay from show runners David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman. Ariane` K I loved this series. I did not read the books but it sounds like it’s only loosely based on the book series. If you like epic long journeys through time and space, lore and tyrants- this series really rivals some of the great sci fi of the past. In some ways, tethering the series to the book series probably hurt the shows reviews which is too bad. The showrunners had some really excellent concepts and storytelling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Zeela G I struggled through this - I am a fan of the books and really had to let go that the show does not even feel loosely based on them - they are using the same character names and otherwise it is just a completely different story. That's okay, and it is a decent and interesting story, but do NOT go in expecting anything familiar at all. I know it's an adaptation and all that but it doesn't feel true to the characters or original concepts. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review Justin A This show is outstanding. It is a breath of fresh air for Science Fiction TV. This series is not a shot-for-shot creation of the book, and I think it is stronger for it. I highly recommend that people go and read the books, as they are good stories, but also to show that the original work would have been impossible to film and would not quite reach a wide audience. The characters, the music, and the sets are breathtaking and allowed me to feel that this is a story taking place thousands of years in the future. The acting is excellent, with some powerfully vivid scenes from the first and second episodes. I am excited with the casting of this show, as each character seems like they enjoyed working on their scenes and the chemistry is very evident across the board. The overall plot for the show is a little complicated as it tends to hop around a good bit, with some patience, I think people will find this show to be very engaging and fun to watch. Thankfully it is a show that answers its questions at a good speed in each episode instead of just leaving everything to come together in the season finale. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Hero W One of the best sci-fi shows! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review Connie M Loved it! It is not the book trilogy; the genetic dynasty is not in the books but the genetic dynasty was an excellent addition. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Steve H If you've read and loved the seven part trilogy, this is not for you. In fact, it's barely recognizable as Asimov's Foundation. I'm certain that once they signed up Jared Harris and Lee Pace, they'd have to mess up the plot to give reasons to keep them around. And they really messed it up. I was so disappointed because this was THE sci-fi book(s) I wanted to see on the screen amid all the comic books. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Read all reviews
